I had bought a homemade dvd set off of e-bay that was burned onto DVD+Rs and it will not play in my dvd player. my dvd player is a new sony model # DVP-NS50P. it is supposed to play DVD+R. is there anyway for me to possibly convert these DVDs to play on my dvd player? oh yeah these dvds wouldn't play on my old sanyo (dwm-460?)player either.

Go to videohelp.com on the left column under lists go to dvd players. You can check practically any player for compatibility here. As for converting, you may be able to use a program like DVD2VCD or something like that providing your player is compatible.

my player will play vcd, but I would like to keep with the dvd format so that I will not lose any quality. I think the problem is in the program that the person used to burn the dvds. does anybody know how I can make these dvds play on a dvd player that plays dvd+r?

I have never heard of a player not playing a dvd because of the program they used (excluding authored dvd's). Have you had any successful attempts at playing DVD+r's before on your sony player?
If your dead set on trying a different program use dvd decrypter to get extract all of the files then use any burning program to burn to disk.

yes I have had success playing dvd+r on this sony player. I don't know if i follow you on the dvd decrypter thing. I did try to make a copy of the disc using dvd decrypter and the disc plays just like the original. when i try to play the disc it says "playback prohibited by area limitations." I think the guy that I bought these from lived in canada or maybe even europe. the dvds that he used are Budget brand dvds.

Ah ha the fact that you bought these from outside of the country could very well have something to do with your problem, providing the original disks creator kept the region code intact. Try this, download anydvd (this software is golden for anyone who backs up dvd's) this program will not only remove most copy protections but will also remove region coding along with a few other bonuses. Don't use DVD Decrypter while using anydvd though, supposedly the two programs conflict with each other. Instead use dvd shrink to back the disk up, you may get a prompt about region coding just select USA. You can back the files up to a folder then burn or just burn on the fly. As for the budget brand dvd's......this may have something to do with it, but I'm not sure. I bought some like that once and I can't re-burn a couple of those disks to save my soul, on the other hand some work fine. Very hit and miss but that is the price you pay for crap media. Let me know what happens.

I tried any dvd and here is what it says:

Summary for drive D: (AnyDVD 5.6.1.1)
    Drive (Hardware) Region: 1

    Media is a Data DVD.
    Booktype: dvd-rom (version 1), Layers: 1

Video DVD (or CD) label: SONY_DVD_RECORDER_VOLUME
    Media is not CSS protected.
    Video Standard: PAL
    Media is region free.

    RCE protection not found.
DVD structure appears to be correct.
Found & removed ALPHA-DVD copy protection!
Autorun not found on Video DVD.
    Bad sector protection not found.
Emulating RPC-2 drive with region 1!

any dvd did not save any files to the harddrive or anything. I may be using anydvd improperly, but it actually closed when i hit the "OK" button and I hit the little icon in the lower right side of my desktop and that is when anydvd gave me the above info.

also it appears to me that the guy I bought these off of had recorded them off of the tv and put them onto dvd, in other words it was not a store bought dvd set it was homemade. also for whatever reason these dvds will play on my dad's apex dvd player.

Apex's are awesome. I bought one for my brother about 5+ years ago and it plays everything and is still going strong. But back to the problem at hand....... it seems I'm at a loss. Your player has played DVD+r's before, there is no region coding, and no matter how you back up the video it still won't play. I have two ideas left. Does the dvd have menus on it? Or does it just play episode straight into another episode? On dvd shrink go to re-author and extract each episode seperately (or all the episodes if they run into each other)then use a re-authoring software to put them all to dvd again.
However this method is usually plauged with sync issues, so this brings me to my second idea......(now I don't like to admit defeat but headaches are annoying so..) go to calibex.com or some other price comparison site and search for an Apex DVD player. As I said above these things can play practically everything also Cyberhome is pretty good (they have some problems with DVDRW's though) and they're fairly cheap. Sorry for not solving your problem, but I gave it my best shot, I hope you or someone can figure it out. If you figure out what was wrong I'd appreciate it if you told me what was going on.

that is a good idea about re-authoring them using shrink. when you say re-author I take it that you mean pull all of the episodes across individually and group them into one big file. I think what you are saying is that my final goal should be to eliminate the menus, right?

If this problem is fixed I will let you know how I got there. I have had bad luck with Apex players in the past. I have run two of them into the ground. the last one I got was one of their best ones and it developed problems in the warranty period, so I sent it back over a year ago and they never returned it. I won't buy a cyberhome because they are not DTS compatible and their remote controls are crap.

Sinister7: thanks for all of your help!!!

does anyone else want to take a stab at this.

i found the guy who sold me the dvd set off of e-bay and I asked him the following:

I bought CHiPs season one from you about 8 months ago and I have never been able to play them correctly. You burned theses onto red Budget RW discs. Do you know if you used any type of region encoding and can you tell me what type of software you used to create the discs? the reason that I am asking you these questions is because there are som people trying to help me to get these discs to play.

    Thanks for your help

If he responds to my message I will post the reply

I'm having the same problem with a new Sony DVP-NS50P. Store-boght DVDs work fine, but anything that was backed up using DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter just returns a message "Cannot Play Disc".
All work fine on my old DVD player (Zenith DVB410).
The DVP-NS50P manual says "Some DVD+RWs/DVD+Rs, DVD-RWs/DVD-Rs or CD-Rs/CD-RWs cannot be played on this player due to the recording quality or physical condition of the disc, or the characteristics of the recording device and authoring software. The disc will not play if it has not been correctly finalized. For more information refer to the operating instructions for the recording device."
Just got the player as a Christmas gift. Thinking of exchanging it if I cannot play some DVDs.

If the media is PAL, download DVD Santa load the files and Convert the video files to NTSC and reburn to media. Will play just like it's supposed to on any NTSC player.

how do i know if the media is PAL?

I'm sorry, I meant the video. My mistake. PAL is the european standard. So if it came from Canada or Europe you can all but guarantee it's PAL. Most video hardware in the US is not PAL compatible, therefore you aren't able to view. I know when I play PAL on my players, they are all cut up on my tv screen. I've downloaded a few movies in this format and just re-encoded as NTSC and it worked properly. As far as I know if it's PAL or NTSC, I don't know of any particular softwares which will be able to decipher. But I can tell you DVD Santa has worked excellently for me to create DVD's from MPEG or AVI and to convert PAL format to DVD.

i downloaded the dvdSanta 4.0 trial version. will it convert the PAL to NTSC, and if so how?

Open Santa, go to the first option Video files to DVD. Browse to your files you want to convert and select to bring into the compilation window. Go to the bottom of the page and select your format NTSC and your screen setting you want. Then Convert. The output files will be saved to your local C:\tempDVD folder created by Santa. After processing it will ask if you choose to burn now or burn later. That easy.
