Problem playing DVD as DV-avi file

Using Windows Maker maker 2 , I have edited and saved my home movies to DV-avi file. The dvd plays fine on my lap top however the disc will not play in my DVD player and I have tried alternative friends players as well without any joy. The disc is a DVDR+ 4.7mb TDK. Can you please tell me if I need to convert these files from avi to dvd?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
