Hello, I am very new to the world of DVD-R. In fact, I just got my drive set up last night. I tried to burn two different DVDs last night. Both played fine on my computer (using Cyberlink PowerDVD XP), but neither would play on my regular DVD player. I read the guide on this site and saw the following: But I do not think this applies to me. Here are the specs of what I did. My drive: Liteon SPHW 812S. It's an 8x drive that supports both +/- media. I updated the firmware with a file from the LiteOn website. My media: The first test used one of the DVDs that came with the drive as a sample. It is a gold dvd that says "4x DVD-R, 4.7GB" on it. The brand is Liteon. The second test used Memorex DVD-R 4x media. My "regular" DVD player: Panaconic DVD RV-27. There is a sticker on the front of the unit that I never took off that says "plays DVD-R media". My computer: I don't think this would figure into the problem, but here are the specs just in case it does: P4 2GB, 512 RAM, 128 MB Video (Gforce FX 5200), SB Live soundcard, a big fat hard drive, and pretty dual flatscreen displays. First Test: I backed up a movie that I own. The movie was UHF, and I used DVD X Copy Express 2.0.1. There was no option to select what to copy and what not to copy, it just went to work doing its thing. When it was finished, the DVD contained only the movie and played perfectly on my computer. When I went to play it on the DVD player, it would not read and gave me an error. Second Test: I own a DVD that is all scratched and messed up beyond repair. I think my dog got a hold of it when he was a puppy. A friend has this same DVD (and no, I don't consider this pirating, I actually OWN the DVD as well, mine is just messed up) and he exported (correct term?) the DVD to a bunch of files. It was close to 4.5 GB of stuff in file types that I had never seen before (IFO, VOB, BUP, etc). I took those files and burned them to a DVD-R using Nero 6.0.0.23 Demo version. Again, the DVD played perfectly on my computer but not on my Panasonic player. Also, I should note: the Cyberlink PowerDVD software came with my drive. As far as I can tell, it will only play DVDs. My drive also came with a software package called "Sonic MyDVD". It seems rather cheesy and aimed at people that want to make DVDs of their babies and stuff. All that being said, does anybody have any suggestions? Am I doing something wrong? I figured that Memorex was a good brand of media, and my player is a Panasonic (not as good as say, a Pioneer, but not some crazy brand I have never heard of either. Do I need new media? Burn using different software? Some kind of firmware upgrade for the RV-27? New DVD player (please don't say this one, I am broke, heh)? Thanks for reading this far. Hopefully somebody has had the same issue and can point me in the right direction. tommahh!
It could be that your dvd standalone just doesn't play dvd-rs, despite its claims that it does. If it doesn't recognize the disc the dvd player will most likely flash a "dirty disc" error message or code. I had an ancient sony player (from a time before they even had recordable dvds) that played dvd-/+rs fine until one day it decided it was not going to play them anymore and started flashing that "dirty disc" message. Try the dvd-rs on another standalone. If they work on a computer they should work in a newer dvd player. Older ones may or may not take them.
The error that comes up, after about 2 min of trying to play it says: "This type of disc cannot be played. Please insert a different disc." I am going to try on a friend's DVD player tonight and see if it works. According to the site listed below, many people have had luck with this player working, and using this same media. http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDnameid=1372&Search=Search&
I have decided that in an attempt to find some media that works, I'm going to Frys tonight and picking up one each of many different types - I hope they sell them in singles. There just has to be something that I am doing wrong or something with the media. The url in my above post has comments from people that have had success with Memorex DVD-R media on a Panasonic RV-27. I'll update this with what happens. Anybody else have any suggestions for media and/or software? Thanks, TOMMAHH!
Thanks for the info. I had already gone to Frys when I read your message, so I didn't think to get any +R DVDs. I did buy some Fuji -R DVDs though, and burned a test copy today. It played on my player (woo!), but it has some quality problems (some glitches, weird noises, and some pixelation) which I will address in a new post if I cannot find any information via a search. Thanks, ---tom
tommahh, It will be worth your time and money .... check out http://www.meritline.com and buy some branded Ritek G04 +/- R's.
Checkout your media here - Let's start with Memorex, Memorex as an excellent example as media goes, figures as high as 50% coasters have been reported (One member bought a stack of 50 and got 23 good burns.), not what I would call an impressive record. There are 4 different companies that manufacture Memorex BTW and product quality varies widely as you might imagine. Easy to see now why the quality of a big-named company can’t be trusted - “ Who’s making your Memorex tonight ?” Note: Memorex in the singles, 5 or 10 pack, as a rule, cause less problem than those Memorex sold in bulk BUT they still aren't recommended for DVD backups. Is it just Memorex ? No ! I just used Memorex as an example. Fuji, Sony, TDK, Orange Pack and many Ritek and Verbatim discs aren’t suitable as a DVD backup media – that’s why we are specific in the type of media we are recommending. 1. * Cheap media freezes, skips, pixelats and may refuse to be recognized :-( Besides "Freezing", "skips" and pixelations, many times you’ll get a “Cyclic Redundancy error” or an "I/O error". This message can mean that your discs are scratched or dirty, it can also mean that your burner won’t accept your “cheap” media :-( Another problem which “pops up” is a “*Power Calibration Error”. This can stop you right in your tracks and most often is caused by, Yep, you guessed it, inexpensive media. *A “Power Calibration Error” can also be attributed to the Optical Components of a DVD Writer, though this isn’t usually the case. Trying to shut down your software and ejecting your DVD then restarting your program and re-inserting the same media recently cleaned has been known to help. Inexpensive media or even average media is great for text, Data, Spreadsheets, .Jpg and .Gif pictures and is good even for MP3 music BUT for DVD backups - BLAaaaaaT! It SUCKTH in an extremely Big-th way ! 2. A good grade, Hi-quality media is needed for DVD reproduction ! “Branded” Ritek G04's or Branded Verbatim are what we’re looking for OR any media boasting “Advanced Metal AZO.” – BUT it MUST SAY “METAL” AZO !, this indicates a superior dye application, while they are sometimes a bit “pricey” they are acceptable. Prices online from Meritline.com have gotten Ritek G04 starting at about a 1/2 dollar($ .50 USD) a disc - Question - If you make coasters out of 3 cheap or even average discs and good copies from 3 Branded Verbatim discs or 3 “Branded” Ritek G04 discs - which ones then will you say are too expensive ? The 3 “Cheapo’s with no movie backup OR, the 3 recommended discs with a perfect backup on each disc ? Bear in mind, Memorex, Fuji, Sony, TDK, Orange Pack and others are quite good for your MP3 music, picture archives, Spread sheets, Data and your text backups and archives, they just don’t work well for DVD backups. Even DataSafe G04’s made by Ritek have been reported as an inferior quality media and are evoking that “Oh no, I shouldn’t have gotten those.” Remember, for DVD backups, purchasing inexpensive media or even average media is a gamble, some people win, the majority of people lose, varying amounts but, they still lose :-( Let's try the right media for the job - just buy a 5 pack of what we recommend that will settle it once and for all - Don’t cheat though, buy the EXACT media we recommended – Using good grade media can guarantee you one thing to an absolute certainty; it surely cannot hurt. BTW, In an effort to clear the air, when I speak of "Cheap" or "Inexpensive" media, I'm not referring to the price you pay at the counter - I'm referring to the type of composite some manufactures use, their method of dye application and the lack of OR the poor quality control used during manufacturing. when I say "Branded" that means that when you pick up a disc in your hand, it says "Ritek" or "Verbatim" on the disc itself. The monetary cost of the media we recommend many times is cheaper than that you are buying now. cheers, Pete PS FAIR WARNING. . . Using that "Cheap" media, your backups may not last all that long - One thing I haven't addressed is the life of a backup made on an "el cheapo" disc. We all know that data, music and video backups on CD's and DVD's will last forever, well, if not forever for at least 100 yrs or so - That's what we've read and that's why we backup our treasures to disc, so that they'll be safe. "BLAaaaT" (the bone chilling sound of an emergency air horn), Wrong, Dead Wrong ! Don't throw the originals away, you may very well need them. Your video camera tapes and family picture CD's and DVD's, may not be there the next time you want to look at them. "Point of fact," inferior discs have a tendency to "Break down]" in time. In a very short time, we're talking disc breakdown in less than a single year, in as little as 6 to 8 months. Important, please read - http://news.independent.co.uk/world/science_technology/story.jsp?story=513486
I have your answer sir! Problem is Liteon 812S! far more than it is your media! I had this DRIVE and I REPEAT "HAD IT" for a week and did NUMEROUS TESTING! for I had to create a graduation video project for my school with time constraints. The fact is that the Lite-ON 812S and all DVD-R media burned with Lite-on Drives are fussy and horrible when played in home STANDALONE DVD players but YUP they will play on computers equipped with DVD-ROM drives/burners. I chose the DVD-R format for it was backward compatible with older DVD-players when DVD+R is not. After all my testing and burning and I created literally 50 coasters with various brands of media, I eventually found out problem was with the LITE-ON burner. Discouraged and desperate, before I knew it was the drive, I bought the pioneer DVR-107D for less money and re-tried all my burning. I only created one coaster after burning 100 new DVD-R's. Nearly every DVD-R burned by the Lite-on would not play in the 8 standalone home DVD-players I tested but every one of the DVD-R's I burned with the PIONEER DID! The best media I found was the RITEK G04's and the MAXELL's. Don't confuse MAXELL with Memorex people do because of the beginning M's. MAXELL is pricy tho but memorex is junk in comparison. But what beautiful DVD-R copying/creating I have achieved with the Pioneer and MAXELL or RITEK combo. Take back the Lite-on and get the pioneer dvr-107d $83 bucks at newegg.com. THESE pioneer drives even boast about their compatibility on DVD-players. I guess they backed it up with me! Good Luck _ _ _X_X_X_X_X_[small]Great to be with you all![/small]
I have also been experiencing some weird results using various stand alone players. Maybe some one could give me an idea on what could be the cause. On my Panasonic DVD stand alone player, I can play movies copied using 321 Platinum, Shrink (3.17 ), Nero Recode 2 and Instant Copy 8. However, on my Toshiba, I cannot play anything that has been copied using Instant Copy 8. Any idea what could be the cause of this. I am using the same media for all ( DVD-R Memorex from the same batch/bundle). Oh they will all play on the PC also. All movies are run through Decrypter and then either modified using DVD Remake Pro and IC8 to burn or Nero Recode 2 and burn. I find it weird that the same movies would play on one stand alone player(Panasonic) and not the other(Toshiba) AND only fail if they were burnt using IC8. If they were burnt using 321 Platinum, Shrink or Recode they all play.
Howdy, howdy there Mr2Tone, Welcome to our little piece of the net Yet again, it sounds like your media - Please refer to my post further up the page - That is many, many times the problem. With that eliminated, any other adjustments are easy. Making adjustments when the problem is media is an exercise in futility. Cheers, Pete
Thank you for the reply Scuba Pete. I have done a few tests on other DVD players and it seems the above only happens when using IC8 and Toshiba players. I have tried various medias such as sony, tdk and verbatim. I have a question on Instant Copy 8. In the settings, you can choose 3 options for writting; 1) tracks at once 2) disk at once 3) raw If you choose automatic, the default is "disk at once". I was wondering what is the recommended option 2) disk at once or 3) raw. I am confused amd think it is only a setting problem. Can anyone provide advise. Thank you.
Sony ... over rated, over priced crap (IMO) TDK ... ok - good media Verbatim ... good media Also I believe it's your toshiba player. Have helped a couple people with toshiba playback problems, and what we've found is toshiba isn't a very compatible player even though it supports the media. Just run a search for toshiba and you'll find those threads.
sometimes it the media that has the problems.....if your using no name brands of media spend a little more for the better media...good luck
What do you recommend? Besides Ritek's. How can it be his burner? [bold]Mr2Tone said "If they were burnt using 321 Platinum, Shrink or Recode they all play."[/bold]
I am using Shrink, nero 6.3 and Ritek "Ridata" and when I play back on computer n/p but with stand alone I get reddish colors in the faces and generally off color thru out. Any input would be great
Here is something that may have an impact; the UDF version being used by the software. From the Pinnacle webboard: A standalone DVD player uses UDF (universal disk file) system to read content of the disk. Computers use more often ISO file system based disk. But a computer DVD player can read most of the time as well ISO as UDF based disks. Thats why most burner program burn a disk as well with UDF as ISO file info. For instance Nero does. Now there exist several versions of UDF. The version most compatible with especially older standalone player is version 1.02. Nero uses I believe version 1.5 if you choose UDF/ISO option to make a video DVD. If you choose UDF DVD in Nero you can choose the UDF version. I always choose UDF instead of video DVD in Nero and set UDF to version 1.2. The disk made in that way will play in almost every standalone player and PC DVD player IC8 uses UDF version 1.5. I used IC8 and instead of burning to the disk, I saved the results to my HD. Since IC8 creates pdi file extensions, you must either convert them back to vob, bup, ifo extensions using Pditool or use Decrypter to burn ( Decrypter recognises the pdi extensions ). Here are the results, 1) using decrypter on the pdi files to burn - played on the Toshiba 2) converting the pdi files with Pditool and then burning with Nero Rom - played on the Toshiba. Nothing to do with the media since I used the same media as my initial test. BTW, the Memorex disks are Prodiscs03 and according to the following link, they are rated equal to the RitekG04 - Here is the link http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
