Reboot. At startup, tap F8 key to enter Windows Advanced Option Menu. Select, Last Know Good Configuration.

Let me get this straight. Your saying you are unable to use system restore, or any installed anti-virus scanner while in safe mode? Try useing safe mode with networking and see if you can get on the Internet to run an online scan, use Housecall or ESET. Make sure you save a log report. What error message are you getting when you try to restore? Are you able to use the run command in normal mode?

No, I didn't mean the DOS Command Prompt. I meant the Windows run command. Here's the path. Start> Run> type, msconfig, let me know if it opens.

May be time to perform a System Recovery, to reformat and reinstall WinXP.

i can enter msconfig but i should say that i can only do it with a program running,RRT, other wise it restricts from entering it and others regedit, task manager, control panel, might be more but i think thats all it restricts. system restore says it could not be completed, i ran it in safe mode yesterday and got a similar message.

How were you able to download trojan remover? You said, earlier you were unable to access the Internet.

Anyway, glad you were able to get your PC up and running yourself.

    Download HijackThis. http://filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
click, Do a system scan and save a logfile. Post log here.

    7. Describe your problem specifically -- including the thread topic, because this helps people who are willing to answer to you.

    Thread title edited.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
DISCONNECT FROM THE INTERNET...REMOVE THE PLUG FROM THE BACK OF THE COMPUTER

Close all other windows before proceeding.

Turn off all real time protection. Anti-virus, Anti-spyware, Anti-malware, or any other security programmes you`re running.

Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please attach the main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Re-enable your security programmes and reconnect to the net.

although this is the old mans approach it's the only thing i'd do in that situation

this seems to be quite the bug, i would back up all my files (docs, mp3's, avi's , excel sheets and everything else) format the disc using a bootable disc or shred the disc then format it, and do a fresh install of WINDOWS,

    wipe the hardrive
    http://www.whitecanyon.com/esupport/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=143

or you can format it or do both
    http://www.oo-software.com/en/

    install windows
    http://lifehacker.com/software/wind...nd-install-windows-xp-from-scratch-157578.php

i suggest you format using a bootable cd or floppy, free ones can be found all over the net
