For some reason, after I downloaded divx codec and some other windows media player codec, my avi files never play the same anymore. The colour of the movie has a greyish tinge. What is the problem here?

I have found the solution to this, stefy.

To change overlay settings, do the following:

    1. In Windows Media Player, on the Tools menu, click Options.

    2. In the Options dialog box, click the Performance tab.

    3. In the Video Acceleration area, click the Advanced button.

    4. In the Video Acceleration Settings dialog box, under Video Acceleration, clear the Use overlays check box.

Sorry for this double post, but I doubt codecs will help since VLC media player gives the same greyish tinge and VLC uses its own codecs and is supposed to play most formats.
