i have maxtor touch one !! disk which was working good two days back ( i got it a month only so its new) but since the day before yesterday i cant open it, sometimes i can see the drivce but when i click and try to open it i get the message it says cant find the drive. first i thought maybe is the problem with usb software so i format my pc and reinstall xp home. but the problem is still there and i cant open it. i did install the software of maxtor... please any help?
Not sure if their diagnostics software works on external drives, but it's probably worth downloading powermax from their site and trying it to see if the drives failed/failing. Can you try it in another PC to see if it has the same problem?
It sounds like the USB to IDE controller inside has broken. This is quite common on these drives. You will need to get an RMA from Maxtor to get it swapped out, they are normally pretty good, and will even send one out before you return the old one, if you give your credit card details to them as security. Unfortunately, you then have the problem with your data. They will not retrieve or transfer it for you, and to get it done by a Maxtor approved dealer, will cost more than the drive does, so you have the options of loosing it for good, paying big money to get it retrieved, or risk getting charged for the replacement drive and break the security seal. If you do the latter, then you can just place the drive in your PC on a spare IDE connector and get your data off. Chances are they will still just replace the drive without cost, but you have to be prepared for them to reject it because of the seal. It really does depend on how important your data is, and if you have it backed up else where. Personally I never trust these drives any more, and always back up the various files to DVD on a regular basis.
i real dont know whats the problem is, i can see the drive sometimes but i cant open it and when i try with other pc its the same thing, when i try to open the disk it make my pc or other peoples pc get hung... anyway thank you for your kind reply guys..
The problem is as I stated before. You already know it is not the PC, as you have already had it working before, and have since tested it on other PCs with the same results. Other than the USB to IDE controller, there is nothing else to it, other than the hard drive inside, that is working as you can sometimes see it. The symptoms you describe are totally consistant with this fault, which is quite common. You can remove the IDE drive and attached it to an IDE port on the PCto prove the drive. Sorry you are going to have to get it replaced! or get another caddy for the drive. Personally I would just open the case and retrieve the data, this at least confirms the drive as okay, and 100% proves the fault as the controller. Remove all traces of the warranty sticker, and do not even mention the fact that it had one on there. Be very careful about how you open it, to make sure no screws get damaged etc.... If after that they refuse to replace the unit because of the sticker, when the unit is sent back to you then just get another caddy, a dual USB2 and Firewire caddy can be bought for about £18.
hi try to scan your drive for viruses, then try also disk defragment may be your drive is corrupted that's why when you put it in other pc it hang so ihope my suggestion works for you....good luck
@ khubos... you could at least read the problem before posting a stupid answer. how did you think that defragmenting a drive that cant be detected was going to help... how did you even think that you could defrag a drive that you cant access. The problem is as BigDk stated. either the IDE-USB controller is broken (thats what id place my money on) or the hard drive itself has become corrupt and no longer functions properly (possible but not as likely)
well thank you all for your kind help, i have ask for drive replacement from maxtor.. so soon i can get new one... the only problem right now is i gonna loose all my music, and some other files... bad luck... in other hand when i use other maxtor in my pc it works well no problem at all... so i think is the problem with the drive not with my pc...
don't say bad words, this is a free idea forum i'm just trying to share my idea, maybe for you it's not good so for me is not an stupid answer because my answer is related to hard drive problem and for what i have know defrag is for hard drive so think twice before saying bad words, anyway sorry if my idea doesn't approved to you co'z your a senior here and i'm a newbie only........
khoubos, its unfortunate that the way SypherTek rebuffed your comments has seemed rather harsh. I think that it could have been put more tactfully, but in essance what he said is spot on. True that a defrag can sort out some minor issues on a HDD, but rectifying a fault which causes the PC to loose all contact is not one of them, and as such was no use in solving the problem. It is always worth taking the time to read what has already been said before hand to get a full picture of what has already been diagnosed, that way you may avoid making suggestions, which to others appear to be pointless and some even look foolish. Personally I think it is worth appreciating that you took the time to add a suggestion, hopefully you will continue to do so in the future. I for one, never make judgements on peoples rank within the forum, as I know that even I had to start from Newbie not long ago, and I have been building and testing systems for more years than I care to think of, on the other side I have also seen plenty of dumb comments from very high ranked members.
