I just bought my first DVD burner (Lite-On SOHW-1673S) and what I thought was good media (Taiyo Yuden 16x DVD-R, TYG03). I believe I have the most up to date firmware (JS0B) and the latest Nero Express 6 update (6.6.0.15). I've tried 3 times without success to burn a DVD (just a simple data backup). Nero never gets past the Lead-In. The Nero log file is shown below. The log file shows "Illegal Disc" and has some odd characters (.`...0@P...!....) in the Media Specific section. Any ideas? Could this be a bad batch of DVDs? Try set DMA to 'on', and burn at lower speed (e.g. 4x). And if a data disc is what you want, try use Nero Burning Rom instead.
Looks like the DMA setting was the problem. The "Let BIOS Select Transfer Mode" option was checked and the transfer mode was "Ultra DMA 4 - Ultra66". I unchecked the "Let BIOS Select Transfer Mode" option and left the transfer mode set at "Ultra DMA 4 - Ultra66". The log file still shows DMA = off, but I was able to burn at 12x. Thanks for the help!
No problem, so long as it works. My final advice would still be try not to burn so fast. You might eventually run into trouble.
I'm having this same issue with my Lite-On drive. edit: burning CDs work fine, it's the DVDs that are screwy. I can burn an ISO file with Alcohol 120% however.
@spbrennan - - that squiggly name within the dots doesn't look like genuine TYG03 to me..... - it's not recommended for movies to go above 4x; for data backup this should be ok (i suppose) but i'd still keep the speed down to a sensible level to ensure data integrity. I suspect you have fake TY discs there...
@weeba - need more to go on. post LAST section of your Nero log, it's in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log, but DO NOT post your serial number, which usually begins with '1A21' or similar
@spbrennan, may i ask WHERE you got those supposedly TYG03s from??? reputable dealer? as creaky mentioned, that media ID coding is freaky~ definitely NOT a genuine TYG03 coding..ALSO, look on the inner hub of the disc, tell me what is on there, i will let you know if it's real or not~ i got stuck w/ FAKE TYG03s a few months ago, sent them back after trying just a few...i noticed that the write speed on them were up to 16x, but, that still doesn't mean anything as to the quality of them..if they are fakes, i would suggest you do what i did and get a refund...the quality scans on mine were horrible.
I bought the DVDs from Meritline.com. I thought these guys were supposed to be pretty good and I've ordered other items from them recently without problems. The inner hub of the discs has "4D524A501254GH" (the last two numbers before the "GH" change from disc to disc, i.e. "54", "55", "56", etc.). A little farther away from the hub on the edge of the write surface is "GH000073" and on the opposite side in very small print is "0114" (these are the same on every disc).
@spbrennan ok...this is a very sensitive topic for me as i have been scammed by meritline on MY own fake TYG03s...HOWEVER, when i found out that i had received fakes, i immediately returned them ALL to meritline, thus, not having much time to carefully look at them. so, with that being said, the GH000073 coding sounds familiar and good to me, also the 4 digit number across the way is good too, BUT, it's your other coding number that is making me question the validity of your TYs. i am NOT going to say they are fake as the tell-tale signs of genuine TYs are definitely THERE, it's the longer coded number you posted that is making me think and double think this so many times in my head...i really WISH i had kept at least ONE so i could double check for you...this is driving me up a wall, because i am at a loss of words and in the position of having my hands tied behind my back due to the fact i can not answer you definitively/properly. a LOT of people on here come to me with ANY and ALL questions Taiyo Yuden related, as i am in close contact with a representative in the North America Taiyo Yuden company, so i get a LOT of my information from the "horse's mouth" so to speak. i can tell you a simple and straight answer since i have thousands of the TYG01s and TYG02s (4x and 8x respectively for TYs), but, since my 1 bad experience with TYG03s (16x dvd-r), i haven't looked into it much further and stick with what i definitively KNOW now regarding the 4x and 8x media in both dvd-r and dvd+r formats. i am truely sorry as my experience with TY 16x media is very limited, as i prefer the 16x Verbatim dvd+r MCC004s that i HAVE used extensively when it comes to 16x rated speed media. i also prefer the dvd+R format personally, so as you can see, my experience comes from thousands of Taiyo Yudens @ 4x or 8x only~ i am going to take a stab in the dark to say yours are authentic ONLY because of the GH000xxx coding that you mentioned and the 4 digit number on the opposite side. as for the longer coding...i have NO CLUE, just being honest. sorry i am not much help and have said nothing very conclusive, i just take TY talk very seriously as i'm known here at AfterDawn as "docTY" or "GeneralTY" etc..etc...if i find out definitively from my Taiyo Yuden rep. regarding these 16x, i will let you know. but, in the meantime, i [bold] THINK [/bold] you got the real deal...not 100% sure, but fairly certain.

hello spbrennan, ok, i have confirmed those are GENUINE AND AUTHENTIC w/ my TY rep. and some further research hehe, i personally buy ALL my Taiyo Yuden from www.supermediastore.com....meritline and rima.com are also very well trusted for genuine TYs... i just had 1 small incident w/ meritline a few months ago where they sent me FAKE TYs, but, that was an isolated incident, nothing YOU should be worried about. i still recommend those 3 online vendors for AUTHENTIC Taiyo Yudens, i think your issue MIGHT be a result of getting a "bad batch"...i personally have not had GREAT success w/ TYG03s, i had MUCH better success with the 4x TYGO1s and the 8x TYG02s than i have with these newer 16x TYs. so, with that being said, if your firmware is up to date, and dma is ON, there must be something else wrong with the configuration. i would rule out media as being the problem IF and ONLY IF things have improved after updating firmware and turning dma ON. if NOT, THEN i think you might have gotten a "bad batch" of those TYG03s, as they ARE IN FACT, authentic... best of luck and let us know if things look up or if trying something else works, i just know my MEDIA very well, namely TYs, but the other members here have much more experience than i do in terms of nero logs and nero in general~

that squiggly thing was very weird indeed, i never saw that with a genuine TY media before...i don't know what to "google" searching keywords "squiggly and Taiyo Yuden media ID coding" doesn't seem like it would work LOL~

I updated the firmware, but I still get the squigly? However, the burn process seems to be working fine. Another note...I have been unable to download firmware from Lite-On's site. When I click on the file name I just get redirected back to the same page with the list of firmware. I assume good media can handle the high speeds better than bad media? I didn't have any problems at 12x with the TYG03, but I want to ensure that I get good burns since I will be archiving "photo negatives" on DVD. Thanks to everyone for all of your help so far!
@spbrennan, Honestly, I wouldn't recommend anyone to go at any higher or beyond 8X regardless of what dvd burner or genuine medias you owned. The faster you burn/back up, the easier of getting coasters i.e. the faster you drive, the sooner you'll get pull over or end up getting an accident. However, that is just how I handle my backing up process, but the choice is yours to make and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I know for a fact that my DRU 710A is capable of 12X and 16X, but I would not dare to waste any of my valuable genuine TYs. With that being said; I can back up a dvd movie copy in just about 8 mins (backing up only, not including the encoding session) using 8X medias, so I'm satisfy at where I'm at as of now.
