My router worked until I tried a program called OpenDNS. It was supposed to increase my speed on the internet. I changed the DNS 1 & DNS 2 to their configuration.

But it didn't work and what happened is that I couldn't get on the internet anymore. I tried changing the configuration back to what I had but that didn't work.

I finally clicked on the option to reset everything to the default settings. But now, not only can I not get on the internet but I also don't know the original password for my router, Lynksys, and I can't get into the configurations anymore.

Please help me. I don't know what to do.

I am so frustrated. I have to go to my parents house to get my email and search the internet for help.

    Thanks

Thanks, I did what you said to do and it worked for only that night. The next morning it didn't work again. I tried what you said to do and that doesn't work now. Does this mean my router is bad and I need a new router?

It is at least 8-10 years old. If I should get another one which one is a good one to get?

Have you heard of the program OpenDNS? Are they a reputable company? Do you think by me trying their program made my router not work?

Thanks so much for your prompt replies!

try resetting the router without the power connected to see what happens. that is either an "a" or "b" series router as now upto a "n" series for wireless.

Well, last night I connected the modem directly to my computer and it still didn't work. So I guess it wasn't my router but my modem. The receive light kept flashing. There was no light for the send light. I tried unplugging the modem and waited about 30 seconds and then replugging it in and it still didn't work. It is a Surfboard SB3100 cable modem. I guess I have to call my cable company.

what did you unconnect from the modem as i usually disconnect the coax cable & the power cable, count to 20 then reconnect the power cable & coax cable in that order. i have the 5100 version from motorola. does yours also have a usb connector on it as mine does? what else is on that router?

Well, I got the internet to work on my computer. I looked in my contacts for my cable carrier, Comcast and found a note I had written several years ago when I lost my internet connection. It told me to turn my computer off, then unplug my modem. Then I was to wait 10 seconds and plug my modem back in, wait 30 seconds and turn on my computer. That worked. Now I decided to try my router. So I reconfigured my router and it didn't work. That didn't make sense to me so I decided to keep the router connected and try the unplugging my modem and turning off my computer routine. Now it worked.

Then I thought I could finally update my cable TV settings. I haven't been able to check out what shows are and will be playing. This connects to my computer through a wireless connection. I tried and it didn't work. Now I was frustrated again. I looked in the configurations and I think the problem is that when I was very frustrated with my router not working, I clicked on going back to my default settings. Now I don't know my password name and I need that for the wireless connection to work. I can't even get into my router configurations because I don't know the password.

Do you possibly know how I can get to my router configurations so I can change the password to something I will remember, and write down.

Thanks again for all of your help. :)

by resetting the router, the wireless settings go back to factory default which there is no encryption or password. i've done it enough times on mine & others.
