    I tried using DVDFab Decrypter to do the copyright protection on this movie and it hangs up on VTS_01_04 file any ideas of what else I can try???

    welcome to AD....... Sorry that no one answered you yet...... DVDDecrypter did CRASH without problems!~ Try using that and post back..... let me know how you made out.

    you can download this free GREAT program here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_decrypter.cfm

    it's better than DVDFab Decrypter and still the king even though it doesn't get updated anymore....... I haven't come accross any DVD that it can't rip! check out my collection from my signature on the bottom!

    Just to add to IHoe - no problems either on my end but used AnyDVD and Recode. No special protection on this disc. Also try cleaning the disc. You error leads me to believe there's something wrong with this part of the disc: smudge, scratch or a bad press. If decrypter can't do it exhange it for a new one.

    I had some problems with the movie crash too.. I used anydvd and dvd shrink. For some reason the movie skipped in a few places. When I rewound it and played it back it played fine. Dvd burnt fine, scratch and smudge free. Not sure if I messed up, new to this.

    @IHoe - no prob! Even the best of us forget sometimes:)

    @wrege
    Welcome to aD!
    The skipping could be caused by the media and burn speed used. What speed did you burn at and what blank media did you use?

    Cleaning the stand alone players and the burner/rom on a pc once in a while with canned air or a cd/dvd cleaner greatly reduces skips.

    Sometimes, that's all there is to it.

    I had the same problem and at probably about the same spot as u (exactly at 63% of that particular file). I thought i would have to return it, but i tried ripping it with my other drive and i was able to do it. If you have more than one drive, try them all and see if you have the same luck as me. Good luck

    Try blowing out the dvd play as suggested by konfused1.
    Imitation uses some iffy manufacturers. Switch to good media like TY or Verbatim DataLifePlus. TY's can be bought in store as Fuji or Sony +R's though you need to make sure they say [bold]Made in Japan[/bold]
    I would also reduce the burn speed down to 4x.

    forgot 2 more things - make sure your firmware is up to date on your burner and to identify the manufacturer of those discs dl this program:
    http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/
    Post back the manufacturer id.

    I was able to succesfully rip the backup using Platinum, however unable to make copies from it. When I try to it starts writing the table of contents and goes to 100% in about 10 seconds using Roxio 7 and continues to burn nothing to the disc. DVD plays fine on first back up. Weird...

    I'm going to try something else.

    i tried to burn CRASH with DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter with AnyDVD in the background and it didn't work. It would get an error at 51% of encoding the dvd. I probably need a new version of shrink. Is there even a new version yet? any suggestions would help. thanks.

    with that skipping problem (wrege). i think its a problem when you encode the dvd with shrink. because that happens to a lot of my dvds that i burn with shrink and decrypter. sometimes im almost at the end of a movie and it skips all the way back to the beginning. haha

    No more updates to shrink as of the summer of last year. The developer now works for Nero. As for your skipping problem sounds more like a media/burn speed issue. What media are you using? Burn speed? See my above 2 posts to wrege. Try those to sort it out.

    Edit to add: Almost forgot - daver415 - the progs you've used for this movie should handle the protection. What error are you getting? Have you tried with Decrypter alone? You may have a scrached, dirty or bad press.

    @SharkBit or Whom may concern,

    Try to rip and decrypt on Mode, File F by using DVD Decrypter, this will solve your problem 99.99% most of the time if Mode, ISO, Read R and DVD Shrink failed to do so.

    **make a folder on hard drive "MYNEWDVDBackup", and a folder called "VIDEO_TS" inside your "MYNEWDVDBackup", Enter and Exit out.
    **open up DVD Decrypter, Mode, File F
    **choose your "source" <-- where the original movie is located
    **choose your "destination" <-- browse to your "MYNEWDVDBackup" and "VIDEO_TS" and OK
    **now click on "Decrypt" sit back and relax untill it's successfully completed.

    (((NOTE: Assuming you're pretty much familiar with DVD Shrink and Nero Recode already))

    Once the files has been decrypted into your hard drive successfully, now you can have either Nero Recode 2 or DVD Shrink to do the encoding process. (NOTE: keep in mind to "custom" the size on DVD Shrink or Recode 2 to "4400MB" or "4350MB" to avoid from getting freeze, and or writing too close to the edge.) After the encoding/compressing process has been completed, just have Nero Burning Rom to do your backup, and or have any of your desire burning engine to do the burning.

    also.... IMATION disks are not good media! Seems to me that you guys are burning or try to burn you movies on crap media! Use Verbatim, Sony, Maxell, Taiyo Yuden disk........ you'll be surprised at your results and if you can booktype your DVD+Rs/RWs to DVD-ROMs then your burnt disks will be more acceptable to most DVD players!

    all i had to do with crash was encode it with dvd shrink with my DVD-R drive. the dvd-rom drive that i usually use for regular dvds is garbage. other than that, i'll probably try those verbatim discs..i always thought those were generic discs. but memorex discs are fine for me. never had a problem yet.

    Watch out for those Memerox - not popular media here! They are usually made by some of the worst manufacturers like CMC. You may want to check out the manufacturer id on them and post back.
    I would def. switch to Verbatim esp. DataLifePlus - quality manufacturers.
