    Hi,

I resently bought a 5.25" case from techsolo where I put in an old IDE Emprex DVD+- writer. After connection over USB 2.0 reading a CD/DVD works fine but I had major problems with writing.

first I tried a CD but did not work, Nero 6.6 tried to perform an SCSI operation. This happened with "Disk at once", finally I tried "Track at once" and it worked!?
Well with DVD's I could not choose "Track at once" so I updated Nero to 7.5 and it worked until the end of the dvd. After reaching 100% it took a sec and Nero displayed some errors:

    14:38:12 #33 CDR -1114 File WriterStatus.cpp, Line 167
    Reset occurred
    F: DVDRW IDE1008

    14:38:12 #34 TRANSFER -24 File WriterStatus.cpp, Line 167
Could not perform end of Disc-at-once

    failed because a reset occured?
    Anyone has an idear?

    Hi.

You have some things working against you here.

The Emprex burner is not among the best and in this case is fairly old. I don't believe it is supported any longer with regular firmware updates.

The Daxon media you're using is of very poor quality for the most part. It's best to use better quality media like Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and made in Japan labeled Fuji and Sony if you can and find it available.

I have no idea whether the external enclosure you're using is a good one or not. It's not one I'm familiar with.

The error you obtained could be from a communication error on the USB bus as a result of the external enclosure, bad USB cable, or something else. It might also be due to the media you're using.

The first thing is to try some different media and swap out the USB cable if you have a spare (I doubt it's the cable since you can read OK). Look for some 8X Sony or Verbatim media for the drive.

    Edit: Added text below:

To eliminate Nero as the culprit, generate a image file with Nero or whatever authoring software you're using and then burn that image file with ImgBurn (free).

The current version of Nero seems to be a good one and you might as well upgrade to it. Be sure to write down your Nero serial number before installing as well as running the Nero 7 Clean Tool.

    Hi laddyboy,

thanks a lot for your comments!
The Emprex is really old, and not really worth using in an USB case. but the DVD writer in my notebook broke and this was the cheapest alternative because I had the Emprex at home.
About the Daxon media I was little bit surprised myself because I bought them under another label. Well I will try better media.

I tried your last advice, create an image and burn it with an other program. And indeed it worked! Guess that means it is Nero's fault? Strange because I never had problems with Nero. Not with the Emprex.

On the 5.25" case it says "with cypress chip" I have no driver for it, maybe someone has an idea if I can get a driver?

Well at least I could empty my HD little bit. :D
    Thanks a lot

    Tim

Nero has always had a problem communicating with some external enclosures. The cause remains unknown as far as I know. You'll probably be OK if you burn with ImgBurn or another program. Very few companies make, brand, and sell their own media which is why we recommend so few brands. Verbatim makes and sells their own as does Taiyo Yuden, although usually available only online. We recommend MIJ labeled Fuji and Sony because they are from Taiyo Yuden. Maxell MIJ is OK as well.
