I've been trying to back up a dvd-r that I had burned several months ago, but when it's almost done encoding, the burn process fails. Any help would be appreciated.

    Here's what I've got:

It looks like Nero can't read the disc. You might have a disc gone bad(what brand was it?). I would say rip it first with DVD Decrypter on your HDD under ISO mode, and then write the ISO onto the disc. You could also try and clean the disc before ripping.

Also, you should enable DMA for your burner:

Cyprusrom was right on the money with this

Your drive is NOT being recognized, turn on DMA as suggested, also you may like to check for firmware update.

I cleaned the disc, tried to fix the DMA issue (which didn't work, even after removing the secondary drive and reinstalling it), and have searched for a firmware upgrade (with no luck). The drive is reading the disc, because I can play it on my computer. It just won't burn!

Are you trying to burn it on-the-fly? Most of the times that method doesn't work.
Have you tried Cyprusrom's advised Decrypter method?

Like Prmiggs says, burning on the fly is a bad ideea, set up for failure ,espaecially if both drives are on the same IDE channel.
just beacuse the DVD plays on your computer, it does not mean is error free when trying to copy it. Ripp ISO burn ISO worked for me most of the time with problematic discs. if you can not copy the file onto HDD, you know is not a burning problem but rather a problematic disc.

I like the user bar premiggs!

    I'll quote Cyprusrom in pictures:

    Burn the DVD:

    Easy as that!

Thanks Cyprusrom! Took me a fair bit to get this far, there's a few more still to add to it... It's a 'work in progress' kind of thing...

By the way, what happened with your burner and the "reset" error?
I was going to look around and learn and start messing with some gif creation, but I am too lazy...!

LOL! I always thoght that if I could totally overcome laziness and procrastination, I would be almost a perfect man...but then I was afraid perfection might be boring, so I gave up that ideea!

That one means Nero is not recogizing the drive. The vers of nero you have is the non-buggy one, so you have a choice of either living with it, or upgrading when 6x becomes stable. It looks like nero 7 is getting debugged with the new versions, but i havent heard of 6x getting fixed yet.

Yes, 6.6.0.18 is the stable version loke Max says. I figured if DVD Decrypter works, and the proces should be a piece of cake since is the backup of a backup, no protection, then we could blame Nero, otherwise, the disc or the burner. Don't know why can't turn DMA on, usually is problematic with Nvidia drives, in that case someone suggested to go in Bios and set up as plug and play, but can't see it in the log.
Already traveled 40 miles since last post!
