Just for starters I want to say this is the most informative site I`ve found on the subject of copying DVDs. Thank you.
I just recently bought a Plextor 708a DVD burner to copy a few of my DVDs. I`m using SKC 4.7gig DVD-R media. This media was reccomended to me by someone who burns 100s of old mvies, serials etc. to DVDs and has never had a coaster.
My first pick to copy was SencondHand Lions. This was probably my first mistake.CloneDVD was able to copy the movie(only, not the whole DVD), but plays on my one DVD player but not another. Also, X-CopyXpress was unable to copy at all, and the same with DVDProtect(formally known as 1DVD).DVD-X-Clone also failed.
As of this writing I`m trying DVD Decrypter, but it`s been at it 3hrs 30 minutes with 8 files to go. One file,VTS_01_4.VOB took 2hrs 30 min for a 821,344,000KB file, with the program stopping once for an error and hitting 900 errors copying this file alone. Right now it`s doing VTS_02_3.VOB at 1,047,992KB, the program stopped once and 30 minutes with 300 errors.
I guess my question is,am I screwing up somewhere, or did I pick one bastard of a movie for my first movie. Is this movie,it`s a new release, using a new encryption? I stopped and tried Drowning Mona and was able to make a copy of that with DVD-X-Copy Xpress.I was also able to make a copy of this movie to the hard drive with DVDProtect, but haven`t figure out how to burn the files with Nero to a hard drive. There is an article posted here somewhere I`m going to read to see what I can do.
Thanks for any help from this newbie.

This week-end I backed up the same movie you tried too w/ no problems. Used DVD Decrypter>Shrink>Nero. Just for Kicks I then used my Wifes copy of Xpress and backed up the Movie to -RW , -no problems. It sounds like the DVD you have has some bad spots on it. Suggest you take it back and get another.

Sounds like you picked a bastard of a movie. With Decrypter (and all the others apps you've tried) taking so long it seems as if it's being slowed down by having to reread a whole slew of bad spots. It's not uncommon to encounter a bad factory disc. If you can, I'd suggest returning it for a new one.

Here's an outstanding guide for using Nero to burn a movie to disc:
