I would like to ask for your assistance in one problem that's been bugging me for a while.A friend ask me to clean up his system because it was infected with a bunch of viruses, malware ,spyware and so on.Well I got rid of all that stuff, but now (yes.there's a but)the OS doesn't want to start. It logs in and when I put the username and password it says saving settings and it logs off automatically. I already read some threads about corrupted registry. But unfortunetly when i tried to network it with my computer it ask me for the Computer name. This is the tricky part.My friend doesn't remember how he name it.This sounds like i'm trying to hack into someone elses computer but, that's not my idea, neither i have the knwoledge to such thing. When I did the scan of the infected HDD I got the message MAXTOR 5T040H4: Hard disk failure is imminent. Please back up your hard disk and have replaced! Which I did I bought another HDD, but I can't make the PC to reboot from the OS disk. The new HDD has been formated and partitioned and it's booting from the cable select jumper. The system keeps giving me the following message: Invalid Boot Diskette Insert BOOT diskette in A: But there is not such unit in the system I disable it,because it's burn. Please, I would gladly appreciate the help and my friend even more. I'm able to access the old HDD thru my pc as and new disk! Thank You!
I'd install Windows on the new HDD. Sounds like the old one is dodgy so it may not even accept reinstalling windows. To install windows you'll need the CD for it.
I've been trying to do so all along, but I can't do it in the old pc with the new HDD. I got the original OS or should i call it reinstallation cd from dell Win XP SP1a. How do I install it? I already did reboot disks and they're read from the CD-ROM (DOS), but the one with the OS won't read or load.I could install that OEM version on this PC, right? I got the product key. Previous OS was Win XP Pro,(lost disc) but with the new HDD i was thinking on using the Home edition to get it running,Can I do that?. I know it's a lot to ask,Thank you, again!
no no, you need to install windows on the PC you want to use it on, it won't work otherwise (due to integrated drivers for the hardware)
This is the panorama.I can't install that OS (win XP SP 1a)into the computer.I'm trying to install it in the pc that I'll be on.(with the new HDD)not the old one. I tried everything boot sequence or configuration and keep getting the message. Invalid Boot Diskette Insert BOOT diskette in A: I got the old pc,with the new HDD(formated and partioned) and the disk. what else do I need?. I think the disc will provided me with the neccesary drivers for the system. Am I wrong?. I could sent some snapshot of the BIOS!,just need to know if I can post them somewhere. By the way quite and impressive systems you'll build!
The PC's trying to boot from a floppy drive. Disable 'Boot-up floppy seek' in the BIOS, and ensure the first disc priority is the CD-drive, then try again. My point about the drivers (by the way no, you will need to download or install CD drivers for the sound card, graphics, network adapter and any peripherals you use, other than mouse, keyboard and speakers) is that when you install Windows to a PC, the installer creates drivers specific to your internal hardware - motherboard, CPU and so on, that if you were to transplant the HDD to another PC with different hardware you couldn't boot windows off it as the drivers wouldn't match the conflicting hardware.

Should I unplug it or remove the battery in order to reset BIOS or move jumpers in the MB?.
Does your xp cd bootup other computers? if it doesn't , you might have to slipstream it. Years ago I also had problems with my xp sp1 installation cd not working when I tried to install windows. I would have to use 6 xp floppys to jumpstart the process then insert the cd. To fix the problem, I just "slipstream" my xp sp1 cd into a xp sp2 cd. This new sp2 cd has worked great for me. It looks complicated but all the necessary files are available for free to slipstream your cd. http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp
Yes, I read some of the postings and actually start doing the process, but when I got to the part of the Wizard i got a message: Service Pack 2 Setup This Service Pack cannot be integrated into a destination that also has Integrated Software Updates. Colsult the Service Pack documentation for more details about supported integration scenarios. (I can't upgrade with a OEM version of the software)It sucks! You got any more ideas.Thank you!
