I use The Classic Media Player and I have the K-Lite codec installed.

The CMP work find with files with the asf extensionmeaning if I am in windows explore and I double click on a file it will open up in CMP and play it properly. So the file association work properly.

However if I go to a site where I want to hear a sound sample and the file has the asf extensionand I click on it, instead of play the file the installer for MS Media player show up and wants me to install it. Example would be Best Buy pick any album with a track sample.

What is the problem here why doesn't the file open in play in CMP?
How do I get it to play the file?
Can I disable the MS Media Player Series 9 Installer program?

Why don't you allow Media Player to get the codec it needs? I don't think you can disable Media player, but maybe you can go to options and make MPC your default player for that particular extension.

That is the problem it is my default player and I have checked inside of it and the asf extension is registered to it and so are the file type under Window options.

And for just letting install no thank, I already can play asf it is just this pesky install that wants to take over.

I have used MS Media player and I just flat out do not like it.

I have used XM Player. I usually ran it from a USB Thumb Drive at work. I loaded my USB drive with the songs I wanted to listen to the next day and XM Player allowed me to listen to my favorite music at work using the AAC format without having to install other software (and get fired for it LOL). It certainly has its advantages.
