    Hiya chaps

Just after a bit of help with my new broadband connection if possible.

I have just got it today and it connects fine at 576kbps but when I download it only seems to go at about 2.00kbps when I have been told it should be about 20-30kbps ??

Any idea's what could be wrong ??

    Thanks for any help

    STEVE

    1. Does it download at 2.0KB from all sources or just that one site you are visiting?
    2. Are their settings for your network card have not optimized? (Device Manager --> NIC Properties --> Advances)

    Hiya Praetor

It is mainly just this one site that it seems slow, I tried somethingon Kazaa and it was fine (speed was about 18/19 which I think is about right). I am new to broadband so I take it it could just be this one site that is slow ?

Also, I don't have a network card. I have got Pipex ADSL broadband which has a USB modem and a microfilter to split the internet from phone calls. I just wondered if I had some settings wrong but the disc was meant to set everything up itself.

One last thing, everytime I switch on my computer I have to re-connect to the internet which only takes about 5 seconds but I thought broadband was a permanent connection so I never had to connect. Its not a big problem I was just wondering.

    Cheers

go to a microsoft site and download something off them. You should get atleast 32KB/sec with your adsl. Sometimes you may even get up to around 80.

Thanks for the help guys, I have just downloaded from a different site and it whizzed through at mainly 28-30 so I think the problem I had must have just been that site I was downloading from. It seems much better now.

    Cheers again, STEVE

Oh, one last thing and I will leave you in peace.

Regarding having to connect every time I switch my computer on (only takes a couple of seconds) is this because I have to get a new IP address every time I go onto the internet ?

What OS are you using? In either case make sure that IPs are obtained automatically and that DHCP is enabled and you should be fine

Cheers guys, all sorted on the speed front now.

Praetor, I am running Windows XP m8, how do I make sure IP's are obtained automatically and that DHCP (whatever that is)is enabled.

    1. Control Panel
    2. Network Connections
    3. Local Arean Network Connnection --> Properties
    4. Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) --> Properties
    5. Make sure everything is set to "automatic" on both tabs
    6. On the General Tab --> Advanced
    7. Make sure you see "DHCP Enabled" on the very firt page that opens

    Praetor, cheers again.

I have checked the Internet Protocol and it has :
    Obtain an IP address automatically
    Obtain DNS server address automatically

but on the General Tab there isn't an Advanced to click on ? Any idea how else I can check that DHCP is enabled.

    Cheers matey

Remember, you can only download as fast as the site you are downloading from. If they are on a slow connection or experiencing alot of traffic you will notice it as well. Just a thought.

Well thats another bottleneck! Odds are that its a USB1.1 modem u've got there... I would go spend $20 and grab a simple 10/100 NIC... save yourself a lot of haslle
