I got the Dynex DVD-RW drive (16x Internal Double-Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW Model: DX-DVDRW16) for Christmas and it seems to have a problem recognizing blank DVD-R discs.

Everytime I put a blank disc in to copy a movie it locks my computer up or gives a message saying it can't recognize my media. I've tried tons of different types of discs, Verbatims, Memorex, etc...

Any ideas? I've upgraded the firmware and still having problems...I've tried using Nero and CloneDVD (AnyDVD) and they all have problems...Should I return the drive and try another?

sounds like either your master & slave settings are wrong OR ...
your ide cable is not hooked up right.
I hope your dvd burner isn't hooked up to the same ide plug thats hooked up to your harddrive
    rule of thumb
Harddrives = IDE 0 (or 1 depending on your motherboard)
    CD/DVD Rom = ide 2
Let me know how it goes

I have ripped and burned a few discs with it successfully, would I be able to do this if my master or slave settings are wrong?

The PC recognizes the drive, it burns CD-R's fine, so that's why I didn't think it could be this...

Do you know of anywhere that would show me how the correct master and slave settings?

The PC already has a DVD Drive is probably set as the master, it's the original that came with the PC, I removed a CD-RW drive and replaced it with a DVD-RW drive.

    Thanks for your help.

I have mine set up with the master DVD-RW set on end of IDE cable and the slave DVD-RW set on the center IDE hookup.

    No problems at all.

if u just replaced it with the dvd drive then should be ok (unless your motherboard didnt detect it which is unlikely) is the slave jumper set to slave on the pins?

    Yep, I'll double-check it though.

If this is the problem would I be able to burn CD-R's and play DVD's with that drive?

It might be worth returning it and trying another one...
