i am currently trying to back up SCARFACE widescreen letterbox special ed.it decrypts fine but when i get to shrink i'm having an issue.it analyzes the dvd file but when i got to backup it starts for about 10 seconds then i get a pop up.the first one says 'programming eror- the handle is invalid',after that i get one saying' programming error- peramiter is incorrect.' so far i've tried dvd decrypter and dvdfab decrypter and each results in the same popups.can anyone please help me out, i would greatly appreciate it.

Strange as there's nothing spectacular about Scarface. I'm assuming this is the Pacino version. Just a few questions and then some suggestions. What are the specs on the system you're using to do the backup; i.e. brand, model, CPU and speed, HD and freespace, RAM and amount, and operating system? Hopefully you're using DVD Shrink 3.2. If not, delete what you have and install the latest version. Try ripping the source to the HD with DVD Decrypter and then open the files with DVD Shrink.

If you continue to have problems, I'd suggest using a trial of another software to see if the problem is in your software or the system. An easy setup is AnyDVD and CloneDVD2. Download the trials from http://www.slysoft.com . If they work and Shrink doesn't, then you know it's the software and not the system.

Thanks Arniebear, but we were getting there. It matters little if he does any of that. If it's just a decryption error, then it would have been found using Decrypter to rip the file. Then all that would be needed is AnyDVD or the free DVDFab Decrypter or DVD43.

The pics are nice, but not necessary and I'm more than able to get a member going on simple problems without sending them to BBMayo and ScubaPete. I remember when BB was still learning here last year.

The 3 week full function trial of AnyDVD can be downloaded at http://www.slysoft.com . Sometimes AD has discounts on the software, check if you decide to purchase. DVD43 is free and available at DVD43.com. I've used both and AnyDVD is the better of the two and has more functionality.

If it's encryption, then he doesn't need to go there. The links or downloads are available here at AD. Besides, VobBlanker is doing it the hard way when there are apps that handle the encryption without having to do manual editing.

The software is no longer available from AD due to Finnish law a lot of it has been pulled off the site.

Surprising as they still link to AnyDVD's website. They can't have a legit editing tool for download, but can link to one of the apps banned in most countries. But that is straying from the point. Everything needed in this instance is either here or linked to here at AD. Thanks for the help, but it wasn't necessary and too many people trying to be helpful can be confusing, especially since all you offered over my strategy was manual editing which isn't the best route for beginners.

As I mentioned, next try using DVD Decrypter while running AnyDVD in the background. This one should do it. Click http://www.slysoft.com to go to Slysoft's website for the download of AnyDVD. Take the quick read to understand the app if not familiar with it. It's about a 3 week full function trial. Do the rip and see if that handles the decryption and gives you a good source file on the HD. AnyDVD will do the decryption and Decrypter will be copying the files to the HD and keepilng a log. Let us know how that turns out.

Reading the web page explains how AnyDVD works. If the red fox icon is on the toolbar, the app should be running. The default setting used to be to startup at boot. If not just click the ICON on the desktop. I select the "Show information window for new media" in settings under the Program tab. It's the bottom check box. That way the app tells you the encryption on the media in the drive. Once you read it, just close the box. Now that you know how to activate that, what info does it give you on the DVD? You can click scroll and copy the text to paste in a message here. On startup the trial usually tells you how many days you have left. AnyDVD doesn't have to be activated till the trial period expires and the trial is full function.

With just AnyDVD running along with DVD Decrypter, are you still getting a popup message? Does that happen with just this particular disc? Exactly what does it say? What condition is the disc in? Are there any scratches on the surface and are htere any smudges, is the the surface clean and shiny? I'm starting to wonder if you don't have a bad disc. Do you know how to run a read test with a utility such as in the Nero toolbox or in DVDInfopro? Can you exchange the one you have and get another or pick up up somewhere?

the dvd decrypter and anydvd run together fine.the problem occurs when i'm trying to shrink.i open the shrink program and open the file.next i analize the file which runs fine.now i get the screen were you can select what you want, like re-author,or uncheck audio choices and all that good stuff just to shrink the file down.i don't disable anything because the file is 4,464mb.so now i back-up, then the problem occurs.it encodes maybe like 10 seconds into it when the pop-up shows up.the first one says 'programming error-exception occured-the handle is invalid.'the next one says'the parameter is incorrect.'then it just starts shrink over again to the options screen. as for the dvd itself it is a little scratched up but plays fine on my computer dvd player.so far i've tried dvd decrypter then dvd shrink, next dvdfab then dvd shrink, then ran anydvd with dvd decrypter then shrink, and finally anydvd with dvdfab then shrink.all have resulted the same way with error pop-ups and in the same spot, give or take a second or two.

since the you have gotten the file already I would try fix vts and/or vobblanker to clean the file w/ it works wonders on false/faulty rips!

although you will be hard pressed to get a good result if your disk is badly pressed/scratched as bro bear states I would most definately take his advice and try the return, if any dvd was properly postioned to rip such a dated title then this is probably the case!
    no worries!
*edit* I see wour reply nowand the scratches are probably to blam eif the above does not give you the results you seek, it may be time to try a scratch repair! a kit can be perchased but I take my disk's to a local video game trade-in "swop-shop" and they will give it a buffing!
they hardly even charge me any more but this cost like two dollars and works wonders! something to consider!

I too had a reading error situation. Messed up the whole thing. Nero Speed CD-DVD program has disk imperfection scanning capabilities. This program, [bold]PgcEdit[/bold] has encryption scanning abilities. Good to know before choosing your tools.

http://www.dvdinfopro.com You can find a free version of the utility DVDInfoPro at this link. It is good enough to have a retail version included with OEM software for burners. HP had it in a package I recently purchased. This is for those not having Nero or looking for another option. It has a bunch of other utilities included, like my favorite disc info for finding manufacturer codes.

Run a utility and check the disc to see if we need to diagnose anything other than a bad disc. Do the read scans and see what turns up.

Out of curiosity, how does the ripped file you have on the hard drive from AnyDVD and DVD Decrypter play on your DVD player software on your PC? What player software do you use?
