I am trying to back up my Sliders Box Set (season 1 & 2) and I am not able to Rip the Discs with my DVD ROM drive (NEC DV-5700A). My burner can rip them, but I do not want to put the exta stress on it.

With DVD Shrink I get this message:

DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue
    Copy Protection Error
The Media in the drive may have changed

In DVD Decrypter, it does not load the disc. It stops when it says "authenticating" at the bottom left. Here is a copy of the Log:

    I 18:04:12 DVD Decrypter Version 3.5.4.0 started!
    I 18:04:12 Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional (5.0, Build 2195 : Service Pack 4)
    I 18:04:12 Initialising SPTI...
I 18:04:12 Searching for SCSI / ATAPI devices...
    I 18:04:12 Found 1 DVD-ROM and 1 DVD±RW!

This is not showing any type of error to me. I am not sure what SPTI is though.

I have a fairly recent re-install of Windows 2000. The only programs I have installed are DVDD, DVDS, Nero, SAV10, Sygate Pro 5.5, WinAVI, & Winzip. I had bearshare and Kazaa installed, but uninstalled them recently. Sliders was the first backup I attempted after my re-installing Windows. I have not had this type of problem before. Also, my burn speed has been locked to 2x when I burn. It lets me set it at any speed, but it stops increasing its speed at 2x.

Another thing is that I cannot play the discs on my computer. I can browse the DVD and most likely play it, but I will have to restart my PC as DVDD not loading caused my system to sort of crash and my desktop and start menu have disappeared.

Is this some type of hardware copy protection? It doesn't seem like it since my burner can rip the discs. I will try different DVDs when I restart my PC to see if it is my DVD ROM going bad.

I am using Ritek R03s (DVD+R) and Fuji made in Japan DVD+R (YUDEN000-?02-00 media code).

Ok, it seems like somehow my DVD-ROM Drive does not want to read anything with copyright protection. I tried "The Others" and I got the same error. Also, I could not even play it, but I can browse inside the DVD.

I then tried my backup of Duece Bigalow and that worked perfectly. Do you think that Windows being reinstalled has something to do with it? Also, I do not have ASPI installed except for whatever Nero installs. Could this do the trick?

Also, is there something within Windows 2000 that is not letting me watch or rip DVDs? Did Microsoft put some type of DRM in a service pack or update?

I used Windows 2000 on my previous install with no problems. I was forced to format my drives because Windows ME totally screwed up in my other partition and the restore discs failed to restore my system. I also kept that Windows 2000 partition very bare. I had only a few more programs like acrobat reader & office XP. I may have also installed Roxio 7 but I am not 100% sure on that one.

Please help me solve this, as I do not want to reinstall Windows again. I will save reinstalling as a last resort. I have nothing important on my drive, but it is just too time consuming to install and update.

Alright, I got it to start decrypting in Shrink, but now it gives a new error at 2% of initial analyzing:

"The maximum number of secrets stored on a single system has been exceeded"

I installed the aspi driver thinking that might do the trick, but it didn't work. I geth this message again:

"DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue
    Copy Protection Error
The Media in the drive may have changed"

I then did the aspi check and it says that "ASPI is not properly installed. One or more components have been replaced with older version of the software"

I got DVD Decrypter to give me a drive authentication error, but I did not copy that error down.

    Anyone have any ideas???

    Problem has been fixed!!!!!!

For anyone else that has this problem or may have it when they do a clean install of their Windows, I had to install the Via 4 in 1 Driver (I have a via motherboard).

Only thing is, something I did screwed my systems stability and it restarted by itself once. I may have to reinstall windows, but at least now I know what to do.

Thanks to anyone that read this and gave it some thought
