I've been trying use my new DVD-ROM drive to watch DVD movies, only it was rather slow and I believe the drive isn't using DMA.

Well, here's the problem: I tried to check the transfer mode settings on IDE controller, yet it doesn't see the drive on Secondary Slave (where it is) or on any other channels (all listed as "no device"). Even stranger, the Device Manager seems to think the drive is SCSI, which I'm fairly certain it's not. The DVD-ROM is the only IDE device (my hard drive is SATA) on my system. The BIOS knows it's on the secondary slave channel (as start-up indicates), so it seems it's Windows XP that's being quirky.

    Any ideas?

Try to uninstall from device manager, the reboot and let XP discover it again as "new hardware".
