    I'm getting problems with 'illegal disc burning'. I've never had this problem before, and I'm wondering if it's because I need to do a firmware upgrade. If so, I'm not really sure where to get it or which one. If someone could help me that would be great. Here's the log info:

    There are 3 different firmwares you can d/l from that site, I didnt specify any particular one as I dont know all the details of your drive, did you choose the correct one?

    @TheBV
    You may have the latest firmware - looks like this version is from 2/2005.
    Is this a laptop? You may need to check the manufacturers site to see if there are any later one's.

    Sony is usually good media. Your using the 16x but your drive is recognizing it. Still might be part of the problem.

    You might also what to try some other media like Verbatim or made in Japan Sony or Fuji. Look for 8x.

    You can also post you're last log and we can see if anything changed.

    Looks to me like all your software and firmware was ok but you were trying to burn a dvd- disc in a dvd+ drive. Go buy some dvd+ media and try again. Save your dvd- disks for future use when you upgrade one day because most new drives handle both + and - .

    Looked closer at your drive and my mistake looks like it can record dvd- disks. I did some searching on the net and discovered a lot of people were having problems with this CD burner after about a year on dell computers. Maybe its time to buy a new drive.
