HI guys and galls ive just got a new DVD RW, a Samsung SH-W162C and put it in my emachines machine, but when I try and copy files from CD or DVD after a few minutes of trying I get a message saying "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." all microsoft tells me to do is change the transfer node from FMA if avalable to PIO Only but this didnt help. I also tried to delete the IDE so win could reinstall them but still nothing so need help.

Your transfer mode should be DMA/UDMA/or DMA/UDMA if available. You do not want pio mode,so microsoft is full of BS.Pio mode will cause issues like very slow burning.

You'll want to uninstall drivers to each of the: Primary and secondary IDE-ATA/Atapi controllers, uninstall drivers, and re-boot,one channel at a time. You may have 1 primary/1 secondary/or you may have 2 of each.

First off: Did you configure them properly- master/slave-on the correct connector of the ide ribbon?

Did you set the pins in the back of the drive to match up with that configuration-master/slave/cable select?

Did that burner come with it's own IDE ribbon?

    Did you use it?

If not: Does your pc have 40 pin/40 wire ribbon or 40 pin/80 wire ribbon?

How are you trying to copy those files that are on cd and dvd? On the fly or ripping them to your harddrive?
