Recently just finished building my 1st ever pc, and although it appeared to be working fine, the CPU heat is way to high, and CMOS will not save. I am only a novice, but have had a few IT guys look at it in work and no idea either. For the cmos, completelty stumped, it as comin up at first sayin processor settings to be changed (along those lines), but wouldnt save when in CMOS. The error is no longer coming up, but i still cant save in cmos. The processor heat is hitting up to 90 at times and turning off. Its brand new, although I have tried thermal paste just incase, leaving the cover of and reseating the heatsink but still no joy. It sits at about 50 idol, but as soon as anything is done, it climbs up and usualy sits at 80. I would really appreciate any help at all, returning any parts isnt really an option. MAchine details below. Abit aa8 3rd eye motherboard Pentium 4 550j 3.4ghz (LG775) 1gb Kingston ddr2 533 6600GT pci-e graphics card 200gb harddrive Sony CD-rw and DVD Jeantech 500w psu (maybe just under 500)
did the cpu heatsink come with a pad or paste? if with a pad, did you remove it before putting the paste on? is the cpu fan spinning & at what speed??
Processor and case were together brand new. It was with the paste, which i removed using a cleaner specifically for the job and applied a thin layer of paste once cleaned. COU fan speed turning at about 2220rpm. Actually been a slight update, the CMOS is now saving with an updated bios, but when i restsrted windows, the pc is shutting off as soon as the first windows loading screen comes up. Totally lost me now, the bios was updated using somethin called flashguard which updates the bios in windows. Its fixed one problem, and created another. Any help would be really appreciated.
go into the bios hardware monitor & leave it there to see what the temp is & see if shuts down or not. trying to see if software problem or hardware.
The temp sits between 70 and 80 in bios, but can sit there and wont shut down, its as soon as i try to boot windows. The windows screen has got 4 options due to a bad shutdown, start normally, start in safe mode etc but the pc closes down as soon as any are selected.
If your are talking degrees C, the temp is entirely too high, by about 40 degrees C. It sounds like the heatsink and fan isn't doing its job, or you have the wrong settings for the CPU, in your BIOS. As far as Windows not booting up, you may have to do a Format C: and reinstall Windows.
Appreciate the help and advise, but due to frustration and lookin through hundreds of forums with no advice not already tried, iv gave up and sent it to a repair shop (gutted as I was quite pleased with myself gettin it to work in the frist place being a novice). Thanks in any case, just hope they can fix it.
Well the pc repair shop have claimed the problem being the cpu not being powerful enough. I had a jeantech 500w which has now been replced with one rated at 550w. Took the pc home, plugged it in, and it did start up. Loading windows the cpu went up to about 70, then idle sat at 45-50. I tried playin City of Heroes, which was the game that caused the problems, and CPU was at about 73 for most of the time. I ran a test, bechmark 2d i think which was on the machine, and at peak the cpu was at 82. definite improvement, and BIOS also was working fine. I then installed my cable modem in the USB port and got broadband up, and was ok for a minute, then pc shutdown, with a blue screen appearing mentioning the usb.system and that a serious error occurred. After re-booting, cpu did start to creep up every so often, and shut itself down one, but everytime the internet was on, the pc crashed and the cpu temp was rising after. Pc's now back at the workshop, but the guys claiming that the temp problems arent occurring with him although he is keeping it for a few days to monitor. If not fixed, im gonna try format, check all connections etc in pc and give it another go. (wish I had just bought a ready made, so frustrating this)
are you using the stock heatsink or a custom heatsink? does the case have fans for intake and exaust?
I don't understand why that the pc repair shop is telling you that you need a 550w PSU for the proccessor.That doesn't sound right unless your video card requires a max amount of watts and your running a few hard drives.I have a pci-e express 6600gt and just a 400 watt PSU and not having your problem.What kind of paste are you using, are you using arctic silver because thats the best.Or are you using the thermal pad with the heatsink.If I had the that many problems I would return the Mobo and the proccessor for a new one or diffrent model.It sound like the pc repair guy has his head up his a**.
Runnin same graphics card and only one sata harddrive. I did remove the thermal pad and applied the paste mentioned, not much of a difference. I reckon the guys aint got no clue, but i went with his advice and I had no other idea. Returning not really an option, as Iv had the parts a few months and no idea where the receipts are (crazy i know). I was thinkin of purchasing a new heatsink, read somewhere that an xp90 lowered a guys temp back about 20. Does this seeem right? or the guys slightly exaggerating?
try getting a new CMOS battery at a pc store and a thermal pad for the stock heatsink.The fan may not be spining at the right speed you could go to a pc store ad get a replacement.This site gives some video examples on thermal pads and grease http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_1260_759^1039^6678,00.html . I would start with replacing the cmos checking the intake fans and then replacing the fan on the heatsink.
2220rpm mine runs at 3400 rpm on a stock heatsink and fan.That may be the problem the fan itself.A standard case fan should run at 2220 rpm.check the bios and see if you can adjust fan speed if you fans attach to the motherboard.
clean the cpu and the heatsink with a bit of toilet tissue (new bit not used bit) apply just a very small bit of paste half a centimetre diameter (why toilet tissue?)because it only removes exess paste, the paste in the microscopic grooves stays then put it back together i'm running mine with a cheapo heatsink and i got it clocked at 3.62 and i have no heat probs however my old 3ghz had to use a aeromaster 4 heatsink and fan to keep it cool and i'm using a 400 watt psu (expensive one but only 400)
