Hi cd-rw.org. I read your comment on the ProDisc brand... We have been selling CD-R for three years. When we tried to introduce ProDisc into local market our customers begun leaving us. We had so many complaints about discs. people used it for different purposes: music, data, etc. Just recently we sold 500 to one of our customers who had never had any problems with our other brand. He used SONY burner with the firmware up to date. His failure rate was 25-30%. Do not know may be they sell differebnt staff in different parts of the world, but in our experience ProDisc is not one of the better makers. Having said this, our partner in Australia sells them as if they are going out of fashion (hundreds of thousands per month). This is mistery for me...
Data2000, So you represent a company? Welcome aboard. First of all, we have been discussing about Prodisc the manufacturer. Prodisc primary distribution brand seems to be SmartBuy. Have you checked the disc manufacturer (see the READ1ST -thread)? If the discs really are made by Prodisc ( http://www.prodisc.com.tw ), then your report failure rate is something totally new. It is just my opinion that Prodiscs are of high quality, but it is a general concensus around the net.
Hi there. Thank you for your reply. IIt is a mystery for me too. I have done some research i the sense of feedbacks on the net and I saw that a lot of people are of high opinion of the brand. The following is the disc from the latest bunch of unlucky 500 that I mentioned in my first mesasge: Manufacturer: Prodisc Code: 97m32s19f Disc Type: CD-R Usage: General Recording Layer: Dye Type 9:Short Strategy (Phtalocyanine) Recording Speed: n/a Capacity: 79:59.74 703MB Additional Capacity: n/a Overburn Capacity: Not Tested With respect, I am not trying to "urinate againstthe wind". It is ou experience. We have had complaints about skipping, data loss when discs are verifiied after burning, plain failure to record fromthe start the list can go on...
Would it be possible that it is just a bad batch of discs? Or could they have sold you B-grade products for cheaper? Have you adressed Prodisc with these issue as this is not what we have used to expect from them.
Hm-m-m. I am telling you a year long story, not just one example of bad batch...I would not want to think that we got B grade discs sold. They were not meant to be B grade. Our agent could would put his life for it. However this is a good thought. At least it could explain our misadventures. In the end of the day ProDisc are among the three largest manufacturers. One would not get that far for nothing, would they? According to http://www.cdmediaworld.com ProDisc is not the brand to die for. Not anywhere near there. What are you doing up at 5AM?!!!
As for addressing the issue... Have you tried to do it yourself or contacting them via email or ringing them up. They talk to you as if you rang up a KGB department of undercover surveilance. We tried to get some data on the longevity of CD-R. It was like talking to a penguin. One would expect them to be proud of what they make and be happy with their acheivements and promote their product. We never got it. I was just interested in it as there were some rumors that it is as good as Mitsui.
This is a very interesting case. After all it is not impossible that Prodisc would be going downhill in terms of quality. Quality is a funny thing. CMC has made crap for years and is now one of the biggest. Kodak always delivered premium and was forced out of the business. Ritek used to make sh*t (<4x) but is now one of the finest and very a big player. I haven't been in touch with Prodisc. Only manufacturer that I have been in contact with is Ritek. I claimed that their products are bad and they hit me with some datasheets from their QA and also a huge box of discs. The discs were fine
Well... this is most certainly not the case with ProDisc, re:your last paragraph. They were very secretive and avoidant... Again, may be ours is only one off unlucky experience as obviuosly there are a lot of happy punters around who have diametrically different opinion. This is certainly no the case with us.
I always had great experience with Prodisc media, but the latest batch I used has had a failure rate of 40-50%. While some discs turn out OK, others have more than 10,000,000 C2 errors just after burnt! Not what I expected from Prodisc from my previous experiences. The media that gave me problems was Prodisc 24x, branded ESN, recorded at any speed from 12x to 32x. It might be they're selling their B-grade as A-grade or that their QC has been very bad recently. Previously, I had used unbranded Prodisc media, and one other unbranded prodisc media I tested (Smart Buy, 40x) was also bad, but not this much. Right now I'm trying to burn a disc on this media, and it's the 3rd consecutive failure... Seems I'll have to find another manufacturer to buy from...
