Hi there. Can someone list the AVI to DVD programs that can *lower* the volume? I have WinAVI (the two latest versions) which has this feature, but it has never worked for me.

    Thanks.

I don't thing any converters will do that (they all can boost it).

Your best bet is to demux your avi, you can use the free avidemux and the free audacity.

    1. open the avi in avidemux
    2. next go to top audio/save/save as mp3, this will save the audio track.
    3. open audacity and browse to the audio file you just saved.
    4. select the whole file/effects/amplify and lower the amplification volume, you can preview it to see if it's quiet enough.
    5. export as mp3 the edited file.
    6. next go back to avidemux, on the video the setting will be copy on the audio (go to the top audio/main track/audio source = external mp3/
    browse to the external file.
    7. save your new avi with the reduce sound. video quality will be the same as the original (no reencoding).

Try AVStoDVD (free). I does a great job and it's main encoder, HCenc produces results superior to DVD Flick, ConvertX and WinAvi (to name a few). Look for the Amplify Audio box and enter you number. It will lower (<1) or amplify (>1).
