hey everyone, i have a ps2 fat 30k model with a strange disc drive issue, the tray will not stay closed, here is a recording of the issue https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaJi...ature=youtu.be i have tried swapping the drive with one from a working console, i have tried different ribbon cables and i have tried switching the power/eject buttons and still have the issue, i dont know what else to look at or what else to test, if anyone has any advice let me know and yes it does load fmcb and will load from a hdd and i will add those but for now i want to try and figure out whats going on with the drive, also the drive does work fine in another console
Hi luke9511- I don't have a PS2. If you put a disc in the drive and hold the disc door closed for maybe 10 or 20 seconds, does it read the disc and stay closed when you release it. Kind of sounds like there's some kind of software telling it to eject the disc.
Since you put a different drive in and it does the same thing, it sounds like software is sending an eject signal.
As I mentioned, I don't have a PS2 so am not familiar with all it's capabilities. Do you have a disc which came with your PS2 which has the drivers on it? If so, you might want to try to reinstall them using the procedure i found here- https://ourpastimes.com/how-to-update-a-ps2-system-driver-12207948.html
Phew- that was a big "duh" on my part. I'm running out of ideas. If you shut the PS2 off, can you close the drawer and, if so, does it open when you start it back up?
yes i can close and no it does not open when its turned on unless i press the eject button someone on another forum said it could be something with the mechacon but i have no idea how to test this
If you put a disc in the tray before shutting down and then shut down, close the drawer and restart, does it read the disc? The thing we can't get past is that you said it also does it when using another drive
I tried to find information on what controls the optical drive but was unable to locate specifics other than "proprietary interface through a custom micro-controller + DSP chip.". I wonder if you tried some of the things in this video= View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GL_ZdAfHVE0 would help even though the video is non-specific with regards to the original problem. I think that adjusting the gear might be most useful.
have watched that video before i got this console and already know it wouldnt help, also it is not a gear problem as i have swapped the drive with a working console and still have the same issue so i know its not a drive problem, the chip that controls the drive is called the mechacon
I wonder what would happen if you attached a portable drive via USB. If that didn't help, I'd say it's a problem here- "proprietary interface through a custom micro-controller + DSP chip.". I had mentioned reinstalling drivers before and I can image that there's a driver for the controller and the chip. Of course, you can't use the CD but you might be able to copy the drivers on the CD to a USB device on a different system that will open the CD and install them from there.
