Hi there i have just bought a flip top for my ps2 (its a SCPH 50003 VERSION 9)it has 8 screws holding the lid on and a further 2(very small)screws holding the cover over the "disc/drive".No wiring had to be moved just a case of unscrew the old one and fit the old round white disc with magnetic centre and screw the new cover on.The problem i am having is that the disc is slipping as if the flip top lid is not coming down far enough(i have tried to contact the seller to no avail) has anyone had this problem? perhaps the flip top is the wrong one?what is the difference between them?.I would be very grateful for any help/advice you could give me all the best andy
wicks Hi. when fitting the flip top did U make sure that the laser travels fully up when the disc door closes. The laser as the door opens pulls down out of the road (of the door). It is easy 2 get the ('door shutting' & 'laser up') out of sync. Units Ive worked on (fixed for customers)this has been the case. Does it load at all. I.E. does SwapDisc load? U r right in thinking that the magnet in the white bit on the flip top should contact quite firmly , squeezing the disc between the motor spindle seat & the magnetic clamp (the white bit). Some thing else it could be is the black seat that the disc actually sits on. If it has moved down the spindle shaft of the disc motor. This is not that uncommon.
Hi there Dix_Fix(sorry about the delay getting back to you)when i load a disc using the slid drawer the laser/mount raises normally(keeping the flip top open to watch)but the disc fouls the case as the slide drawer opens because it is off its "mount".If you put light pressure on the centre of the flip lid when disc is first inserted it usually loads ok(if a bit noisey).could the laser/mount be raised slightly? or can you get different white magnetic plastic rings slightly deeper? ive tried packing behind the white ring but made no difference ring needs to come down slightly further.as you have repaired so many i know you will get the jist of what i am trying to say and i hope you may have come across this problem and found a way around it.I look forward to hearing from you all the best andy
Hi wicks I was tooling around on the web & came accross a site, sounds very much like yr problem 4 sure. Cut & paste this link to your browser & it should take U straight to the page Im talking about. http://www.ps2cover.com/v9modification.gif means U have to take the cover off again, but this should fix it eh ?? Let us know how U go. vini vidi vici
Hi there Dix_Fix thanks for the link i had a look but the bits it says to remove are not on my flip top but what i did try was to leave the cover off completely and load a disc and then put the white disc on top of the game disc and the magnet centre'd it instantly and the game loaded with no problem at all.It seems like the lid is stopping the white plastic magnetic ring from reaching the drive and securing the game disc in place.I've thought of a way round this but i will need another white ring(in case it goes pear shaped ha ha).Do you know of anywhere i can get a white ring?.What i'll do is cut the white ring diameter so it falls through the retainer in lid and glue the centre of an old cd slightly bigger to it so its retained in the lid which will allow the magnet to drop slightly which might allow it to make contact with the drive(what do you think?)its worth a go but i might need another ring if it does not work (kids would drive me up the wall)all the best .......andy
Wicks I still think its the way the cover is fitting. Having said that what is stopping U taking the white bit out of the filp top lid & just leaving the flip top open with the white bit on the disc. Running the game with the flip top open. I do this with my V12 (it doesnt have the white bit) same result though, the disc wont slip & U dont have to modify anything. The only time I had a problem was when the cat came up & saw the disc spinning & swiped at it causing the disc to come out of the machine & go scooting accross the floor (f***ed it) lucky it was a copy. If U want to try the method U described 2 me U can get a white bit out of any CD/DVD dirve form a computer,(I threw out 3 old CD drives 2 weeks ago, bummer). The white bit only centres the disc, the magnet is in the spindle head on the motor, not in the white bit. The white bit has a piece of metal 4 the spindle to clamp on to. the other thing U could try is a felt washer on top of the spindle, this would raise the spindle height & should clasp the white disc retainer. The only thing is if the laser would still read. I just tried the felt washer in my V9 & it worked fine. The felt washers R available from any video repairer, as this is what videos use as clutches, most repairers will have a box of them in assorted sizes, the 1 I used is 1mm thick, 18mm inside diameter, 24mm outside diameter. Another method that should work is using 2 small pieces of sticky tape (scotch tape). I have a photo of how U do this, if U want a copy email me (IMRichard1st@aol.com) & ill send it as an attachement. See how U go. vini vidi vici
wicks It might sound stupid but remember that the white disc retainer spins with the disc when the console is running. Also U could raise the whole DVD drive by simply putting 4 small washers under the bottom of the DVD drive mounting screws. This might make the spindle foul the drawer when ejecting or loading. But isnt the whole idea of having a flip top, so U never have to use the eject button. To load a new game U simply press the green(reset) button for 3-5secs to turn the machine off put the game disc in (via flip top)& re-boot by the reset button. This is the only way U can do it on V12(no drawer) cant see why this wont work on V9. My V9 doesnt have a flip top. vini vidi vici
You have to take the "small round white" thing under the "flip top" cover off (this round white thingy is originally from your PS2 and it's sitting under the original cover also,) loose the 2 small screws a little bit so it's about 2 mil droping down, then put back on the "small round white" thing that holds or tighten the disc. This should solve your problem. I did this to my PS2 V9 and my nephew's V5 and it's working like a charm without no noise whatsoever. Hope this help you out.
Hi Dix_Fix the reason i used the slid draw was to see what was happening whilst loading. The thought of leaving the white disc loose worries me with sticky little fingers about it would soon get lost(for sure)but i like the idea of the felt washer i think that would raise it just enough for the magnet to make contact and allow the white disc to spin feely in the lid i dont see any reason why you could not use the flip lid or the slide draw (when this problem is sorted) as the drive/laser drop well down clear to eject the slide drawer(better for the kids to use as they are used to it when using original games). The flip top is mainly for my benefit really as i want to try swap magic on some games i made back-ups of and get imported games which are almost half price and put them on to a hard drive which i now have got it may also be worth a go at raising the drive base as you suggested as well if the felt washers dont raise it enough. Thanks for taking the time out to reply i'm really grateful i'll let you know how i get on all the best.......andy..ps to alkohol hi there no white disc came with the new flip top also there are no screws in the lid of mine to adjust the white disc it just sits in the retainer in the lid...... but thanks anyway
hey there, i had a similar situation, i got my flip top from divineo for a v9, i had the same problem the white magnet disc would not come down enough to stick down, so what i did was to take out the white dick out of flip from its holder, unscrewed the holder, and put a rubberband where the holder sits, and then put back the screws not too tight, this gave more life to the holder, this would make sure the disc has more room to go down, and it worked, works a treat, hope this helps!
Hi there mabbas01 thanks for the reply but i think the flip top i have must be different from the one you have as there is no screws in the lid to adjust the round retainer that the white disc sits in is part of the flip top itself i did try bending the little tabs down(as a last resort)but they are very brittle and snapped off so the flip top went in the skip(problem solved ha ha )one question though on yours can you use the slide drawer as well as the flip lid? all the best....andy
i did try the slide tool with no success whatsoever, i donno anyone who did, sliding all the time would be too hectic, happy with the fliptop, hopefully my client wont stuff it up lol, ps2s are always trouble, love modding xboxes though cheers!
wicks did U have any success? FYI the white magnetic disc clamp r for sale for approx $5 at Divineo http://www.divineo.net
Hi there Dix_Fix and mabbas01 as you said the white disc was 5 dollars i assume you are in the USA as i am in the UK it sounds like you are getting better flip tops than we are getting here which would make sense of the ideas you gave to adjust the white disc it would appear the flip tops you can get are better quality and more adaptable than the ones here.As i said in my last email i broke the retaining tabs in the flip top and as i could not use it i put it in the trash can.i now have a hard drive fitted and load games on that now which gets rid of the problems of damaged to original disc the only down side is that it won't run all games for some reason but will the run majority of games(i use HD Advance)ok guys thanks for your help i may have another go at a flip top later (maybe from the site you said if they deliver to the uk)all the best for now......andy
sorry, i may be a little late, but, to solve your problem wicks you have to take of the whole of the white disk enclosure on the underside of the flip top by unscrewing the 2 screws, then put 2 1mm washers BEHIND the black holder and screw it back in. This will bring the holder and disk down to meet the laser head and stop the noise and misfiring. Also, we have spare parts like the plastic white disk holder tray, the one with the 3 plastic bits, if you email me, i'll get one sent to you. I am in the UK Chris
Hi chris the flip is no more,I snapped the little tabs off making it un-usable and binned it.Others have said about the screws holding the white disc enclosure but on the one i had it was part of the flip top there was no way of separating it from the top there were no screws at all on the flip top maybe i was sent the wrong one?i dont know but it did fit together lovely unscrew the old one and screw the new one on no wires to move or anything come to that.on yours can you use your slide drawer as well as the flip top or JUST the flip top?.Thanks for getting back to me i will try again later and get a flip top from a different source hopefully one that has the adaptable lid with the screws like you said then all might be well ha ha all the best......andy
i have a playstation 2 slimline witch comes with a flip top cover can someone tell me if i can play burned games with swap magic and without a mod chip. if possible show me how. send me a message at italian_bettz@yahoo.com
Hi bettiol, the short answer is YES !!! All U need is 2 things, niether of which require U 2 pull yr PSTwo apart, the first, swapMagic 3.3 or later (the earlier versions wont work with V12 slimline PSTwo)(approx $30-$35), this will let U switch games under software control. The second is a hardware fix, SlimTool(approx $15-$20) is 1 type, Magic Switch (I think its called)is another. This lets U open yr fliptop without the Playstation knowing its open. Enabling U 2 physically change from the SwapMagic disc to your .iso copy. The SwapMagic disc is mandatory, at this stage(uncopyable). The SlimTool/Magic Switch, however is not. If U have any sort of mechanical ability at all U can open yr PSTwo & defeat the door(fliptop) open switches. 1 at the front of the machine(just above the on/off button),& 1 at the rear of the machine next to the left hand hinge,(looking from the front),this 1 is in the bottom of the machine. Enough crap from me have a look on the net 4 SlimTool, Magic Switch & SwapMagic 3.3/3.6, U could try http://www.divineo.net/ they sell all this stuff.
try http://www.gocybershopping.com or http://www.playstationmodchip.com I think they have more info for you. do a quick search for flip top and you'll find it on there site maybe copy and paste link into browser cheers
