I completely ruined my new PS2. The only positive thing I can say is, the mod chip is fine.

I got a crystal 2 pro mod chip and the install was going smooth until we had to solder on the plated thru holes. This was the second phase of the install. We had already powered on the chip for the first test and it worked. Powered up and no steady light as expected.

Those holes really suck. I couldn't get my solder to flow in the holes, and even when I thought the wires were secure and in the hole they just popped back off. So I did the only other thing I could think of at the time.. I tried soldering to the leads of the chip instead and that was a real bad idea. I ended up bridging the solder and ultimately ruining the chip while trying to remove the solder.

You guys got any tips for soldering on those plated holes? I guess I'm going to use my botched motherboard for practice until I can get another ps2.

Apply flux to those tiny copper holes, should be easier to tin.
