Gday; I have a v9 PS2, a network adapter for it, and a brand new Hitachi 160GB. I want a nice media console. I realize Xbox so much more stuff with it's EvoX, Media Player, blah blah blah but I already have a ps2 and 5 games for it. I also have a buget of $100 to spend. What are your suggestions? Should I sell my ps2 and forget about MGS and RE4 and start playing real, non-watered down technically bullshit released on ps2, xbox games? It's really 50/50 for me right now. I just don't want to lose my money again switching the format, but I really need a media console.
for the hundred bucks you can pick up a 40 dollar used box at a flea market/yard sale/pawn shop and pop a 60 buck chip in it and have the best of both worlds. I've played several games on both and one may be better on the box the next on the PS2 so it's not as cut and dry as you may think. you could also spend the 100 bucks on a DMS4 Pro for your PS2 then it'll directly boot to the harddrive and also allow you to play backup games. then the price of games comes down considerably kc
Yeah I have HDA 3.0 for my ps2. I don't see a point in a modchip. I just want to play Chaos Theory, Black, NFS Most Wanted, Burnout series and others that are better for Xbox. I realize the exploit is free except for the fact that you need to have action replay and splinter cell copy, both of which I can obtain for less than 30 bones. PS Can you name one ps2 game that is superior to the xbox version? Maybe San Andreas, that's all I can remember.
MGS2S, and don't forget another all time favorite that is only on the PS2, God of War, part 2 to be out shortly and again ONLY ON PS2. kc
I have that game too and I meant Snake Eater two posts ago. It will suck not being able to play those again but I think I will go with the xbox/evoX exploit thing.
From the start it already seemed like you was just bashing the PS2 and had no intentions on keeping the PS2 or modding it so why make this thread ? You made up your mind before and after you made the thread
I use my Xbox as a media center mainly. I do not really use it for gaming as I use my PS2/PS3 for that. If you can get your hands on a cheap Xbox (unless you have one already) and throw an X2.6ce with a nice sized HD (I only use a 160 and could have gotten away with a 120 for my needs) then I say go for it. **Opinion Alert** To me the Xbox's strong point is the media center aspects not for Xbox games...
yes I guess I forgot that Xbox doesn't have God of War, RE4, Snake Eater, GT4...I may just save my cash and invest it in a 360 when the price drops Q1/2007. What do you guys think?
I say you go for it, I'm trying to save up to do the same as i feel the PS2 online will completely die out very soon and i'm not a fan of the PS3 or it's price lol
PS2/PS3 online will never die out, it's FREE and that keeps people using it over XBL. now individual games do die off and servers are shut down because they are no longer worthwhile to maintain for one or two players a year to log onto. kc
Well the ps2 online has been "officially" dead for a while when Sony stopped making those network adapters (which go for $70 on Ebay...) so it's nice I have that. And I always liked xbl infinitely more than PS2's "free" online service, plagued with cheaters and hackers. Now it would be cool if GT4 and RE4 were online games, if that were the case, ps2's online would be thriving right about now.
only a fool would buy one for 70 bucks off ebay when you can still get them in retail stores and from most online retailers for 40 bucks, even Amazon.com has 12 of them currently. kc EDIT: i just breezed over ebay too and they are only going for at most 40 bucks.......
just becasue someone posts one as rare and sticks a high price on it doenst mean it sells for that......... http://cgi.ebay.com/Official-Sony-P...7QQihZ011QQcategoryZ41059QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-PS2-NETWORK...3QQihZ002QQcategoryZ41059QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/PS2-PLAYSTATION...4QQihZ009QQcategoryZ41059QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem all have bids and are ending in the next few hours and all are less then 40 bucks....... nuff said? kc
if you are looking for a "media center" the xbox hands down beats the ps2 in that department. if you are looking for games then it comes down to what kind of games you like, fps= halo xbox, role playing= final fantasy ps2 and so on.... the good news is now that the next gen systems are out the prices for everything will drop dramaticily. and if you go xbox dont by a chip, just softmod it. it sounds alot harder than what it is.
Just a thought.. An xbox with a huge drive in it makes a superb cheap small NAS. That's what I use 4 of them for... Then one as a media centre/mp3 jukebox under the TV, and one for playing games on... Never got on with the ps2 from a technical perspective ( I modded approx 50)..far too expensive to mod, and a bit on the fragile side..especially the dvd drive.
I've hard modded over 750 PS2s and 168 XBOXs, i don't find PS2s to be fragile at all and top of the line chips cost the same for both boxes and PS2s, both have free softmods so i beg to differ with your opinion on that. i also find the DVD drive in the boxes to be more cheaply built and more often then the PS2s have problems with the weak eject motor. kc
I'll be the first to admit I haven't looked at a ps2 in 12 months, and back then a dms4 was approx £50 compared to an xecuter3 at £34. The xbox has a drive already inside..too small to be much use but available for a start. From what I remember about the ps2..at the time the HDD add on kit was about £70-80... That plus the chip a considerable amount more than to achieve the same with an xbox.. having been professionally employed repairing both consoles I have seen thousands of each..my comments are merely observations of a technician after 4 years in the trade. I'm no fanboy..both consoles have weaknesses and strengths. The ps2's are more often physically damaged, particularly the drive tray and the av cable socket.. The xbox main failings are the mains input socket and failure of that horrible philips vad 6011 drive. The samsung drive fault is stock right across all samsung drives.. I even see tss522 series burners with the same fault. It's nothing to do with the tray motor. It's the drive belt that stretches over time. It's easy, simple and cheap to fix..when you are aware of it and have a stock of belts for the purpose. you may have noticed.. I wasn't contradicting anything in this thread..just passing on some observations on two obsolete pieces of equipment..both of which will probably outlast the new series of consoles.... they just don't make 'em like that any more.....
