My PS2 has had some problems in the past with playing backup and original DVD movies. Now it still plays the Originals (with some skipping) but it wont play the backups AT ALL! I tried the backups that worked fine in the past but, now they wont work at all. It just says DISK READ ERROR!!! The games work fine (Original and Backup games). I have an older version of the PS2, I dont know exactly the version that I have (maybe like 2 or 3 cuz I got it a long time ago. I Also got a laser cleaner (the CD with the brushes) but it still wont work. I tried cleaning it like 10 times. I also used a lot of different kind of media, like Maxell, Memorex, TY, CompUsa, and some others. Can anyone tell me what I can do to fix this problem??? Thank you!!!
Hi It sounds like your laser needs adjusted you can find out how to do it here http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars/1 Hope this helps.
Is there any way to take care of the problem WITHOUT having to open the PS2, cuz im really not good with this. I had some bad experiences with my last PS2....
Hi There is no way of doing this without opening the console, it isnt that bad to do if you take your time follow the instructions in that link just watch the ribbon for the power and eject buttons, from what you described it shouldnt take that much adjustment, when you have it open try cleaning the laser with alcohol and a cotton bud. Let me know how you get on.
Well, I DID run a CD Laser Cleaner and ran it like 10 times already, so I think its clean enough, I think its something else, cuz it reads everything just fine except for backup DVD movies. It might be because its an old PS2. I dunno, thanks anyway!
k my friend asked me to ask this quesstion on afterdawn(he dont have the internet bummer eh) well any ways his ps2 will not play dvd movies,he has never modded it either or even taken it a part, what is wrong, the laser? Tahnkz
Well thats sort of what Im trying to find out. Except that mine wont read Backup DVD's..... You can try this link and see if it works for you, cuz I dont wanna take my PS2 apart. I might let someone do it for me, someone that knows more about this. Anyways here is the link: http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars/1
I had this problem too until I figured it was the dvd media and the burn speed. Use Verbatim DVD+R, and burn at 1x. Sorry, i know its slow but the PS2 will read it fine, old or not.
clean lens with alcohol, buy a multimeter, reduce cdpot (reduce to about 700ohm on v1 to v6) and dvdpot with about 20 procent, that should work for sure. there is no need to adjust the white cog. leave it as original or movies/games will have difficulty loading data.
Well DVDBack23, the problem is, that I cant burn at 1X, my burner wont allow it for some reason. But I can Use Verbatim and see if it will work at 2X.
Ok, I dont understand why you cannot burn at 1x and i dont know if it will work at 2x. have you checked the disks, some dont allow 1x burning, it would say it either on the disk or in the spindle it came with. Let me know if it works.
No, there are some burners that just cant burn at 1X. Mine is one of them. I can burn at every speed but 1X. I know this because I have tried with a lot of different media. The thing is, that my other backup DVD movies USE TO work, but now they dont. So I doubt that its a speed issue. It might be a media issue though. So im gonna try some Verbatims and see if they work. Also, does anyone know what speed I should make the PS2 read? Because it says, FAST or STANDARD, and I have mine on STANDARD.
