As of 5/14/08, there is currently No Way of playing backup ps3 games.

If and/or when this changes, this thread will be updated.

Please stop posting questions about if or how you can play PS3 backups.

    Thanks

It doesn't matter where you put this. There will always be some idiot that will ask this question.

Definately a good thread to have, as I would assume more and more of these threads will appear when games such as Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 are released.

Such games have a big editing community and as such, modded playstations will be cried out for (even more than now!)

I'm glad this has been stickied, but your still going to have a lot of newb posts asking the same question over and over. I was reading the swap switch tutorial and enjoyed the mod where the man put three switches into an intercooler(I'll go back to look at your name to give you credit). Not only did he retain original functionality it could also play backups. While reading through other threads it has been said several times that the swap switch will not work for ps3 backups, but has anyone with a blu-ray burner even tried? I took the time to read most of that thread, but I didn't see where anyone tried with a ps3 backup. I was tired and may have over looked it. On another note I'll be glad to see when an exploit comes out, but at the same time I hope that the playstation network is monitored better than ps2 online games. I am not looking forward to playing against mod disk users again.

Even if a mod came out for the ps3 i wouldnt use it. Id rather buy my games and know that my ps3 will not get banned from PSn, or break down or something. Imagine Ps3 without online play.

I'd definately use a mod chip, or similar.

I've burnt countless copies of my pes disks, with various different patches. Things that Konami simp,y can't incorporate due to licensing issues get rectified by the aditing community and it makes for a more enjoyable and personalised game.

I buy games, but I'd also like the option to play backups.

Waiting is a nightmare. Why doesn’t someone just get of their arse and just sort it out for us!!!! only rarely do you get a game that is worth its price. I can’t believe the release of GTA4 has been postponed till next year! GTA was the only reason I bought the ps3. I would have waited till there was a mod if they hadn't played this trickery! I’ve had my ps3 since February and have no games! My ps3 is covered in dust :(

Why is the mod taking so long? Can it be done? What’s this about getting banned from PSn? Is this a possibility?

Finally.. Now the mod's should put a rule in the Forum rules saying.. "DO NOT ASK ABOUT PS3 BACKUPS UNTIL ONE IS RELEASED"
I just like anyone else would love to see the ability for the PS3 to play backups. But I actually bought the PS3 with no intention to play them. I have a PS2 with hundreds of backups and have not played half of them. I felt like that I never could really get into a game b/c I have so many games, too many choices.. Like an A.D.D kid on cracks on Christmas morning with a bucket full of every kinda candy imaginable.
I have said this many many times, and I will say it again for everyone that is biotching about a PS3 mod. THink about this. If there is a mod, it would be expensive to use. You would probably be better off buying the original than making your backups. Why? A couple reasons. First right now, blueray burners are expensive as hell,Blue Ray Disc are expensive and renting the game from blockbuster or where ever is expensive. ok here is the break down.

    Average prices:
    Blueray burner $475 - $1200
Blue ray disc $13 - $32 per DISC
Renting from blockbuster average $6 per game
Total= average at the max price $1244 just to make backs

    or/IF

Backing up to HDD would ever be available, that option, to me, is pointless too. 10 - eventually 70g games on a 160g HDD, thats not many Games..You can put an average of 4 or 5 blueray games on HDD. Actually this option would probably be cheaper than blue ray disc backs option.

In the long run you may come out on top, but there isnt enough games out to come out on top. Games run bout $69.99 per game. $1244 = bout 18 - 20 games.

Not only does the price seem a bit steep for making backups right now, but I like the fact that I own the originals.

Anyway this is part based my opinion. At this time it would be more expensive to back up games and play them, than to just buy the game.

Well put. At this point in time I'm happy with buying games and playing the crap out of them. I too have ps2 games I have yet to even play.

i started the swap switch tutorial and have tried swapping a blu-ray backup of Virtua Fighter 5 and it does not work. The Playstation 3 logo does come up and then it goes back to the XMB with an error.

Pizzag, If i understand the tutorial correctly you must load a PS2 game to run a PS2 game, or a PS1 to run a PS1 game. Does that makes sense? If you load a copy PS2 DVD after a PS3 blue-ray, the console is in the wrong mode. Try loading a PS2 game and then swapping a PS2 copy. That might do the trick

He has no problem getting ps1 or ps2 backups to play with his swap switch. He was saying that he can't get a ps3 backup to play.

People wont read this because it is all cluttered at the top of the page. There are too many stickies.

My question is :Is there anyway to play a game from an external HDD? Why do I see Ps3 Iso's floating around the net if there is no way to play them?

There is no way at this point to load a backup, from a HDD or Blu Ray. There are iso's floating around that people are holding onto if and when this is possible.
