Oh and as far as the control board goes the video on here is of removing the NAND flash chip. You might be better off replacing the IC.You can find the new IC chip online for about $20, Because if you damage your NAND chip your ps3 is trash!!! Because that has the firmware and the keys on it!!! The IC is not a flash chip it just has very very basic info on it for the spindle motor and worm gear motor... If you mess that up you can just buy a new one they are all the same!!!

here is a pic of the NAND and the IC http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j209/BFeldhak/zz-ps3-db400.jpg

Since the laser moves, emits light, and the disc spins, do you think it is still the laser?

My PS3 was having the same symptoms as the ones you described. After reading the entire thread I decided that replacing the laser was my best odds at fixing my PS3. I purchased the laser from PSXBOY. The laser transplant operation went smoothly and my drive was restored. I have only recently changed the laser so let's say "so far, so good". I will conduct a thorough test of drive with all media formats, and I hope that the replacement laser lasts longer than the original laser. That one lasted me only a year and eight months.

    Hi guys,
    Can anyone advise me further?
My son has a PS3 and when he bought a game recently the Bluray spins but no games can be read.
Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be?
    Cheers
    Warby.

    Warby,

First off, is the PS3 still under warranty? If it is, obviously ring Sony and have them send you a 'coffin'. They'll either repair your unit or replace it with another unit for free.

If your unit is out of warranty, the repair itself isn't too difficult. You have two paths to take regarding a faulty laser, the first is to get just the laser lens assembly, the second is to get the entire tray which includes the metal bracket, laser and worm gear. Obviously the laser lens itself is the less expensive fix, but the tray assembly is, in my opinion, an easier DIY job.

There are many options on where to get the part from, read through this entire thread and you'll see more options that just Shadow's suggestion (not saying to dismiss his advice, just don't lock yourself in to one poster's comments).

    Good luck!

Thanks for your replies, my son bought it second hand so Sony told him where to go basically. I will look into costing it out and repairing myself as not too bad at repairing consoles and PC's etc so a simple laser should be straight forward (i hope) lol.

Thanks again to you both for the advice.

I think I'm going to place an order for the Stencilquick kit. Can you post a link to the chip datasheet/specs? I trust your specs listed here but perhaps sending them a datasheet when placing the order may be helpful.

    Thanks,
    -Andy

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this but here goes

I bought this PS3 unit that would freeze and then wouldnt read discs, so i replaced the blu ray laser on it thinking that might be the problem. After i replaced it i tested it out and tried playing some MLB The Show 08. I selected the quick game option, First the game took forever to load so i restarted, then as soon as i selected the teams after the restart and tried to start a game the Game shut off itself and went back to the PS3 Menu then it didnt read the disc as being in the system at all. So i shut down the system then started it back up again and tried a different game. I put in Madden and it read that there was a disc in the system but when i went to load it the screen went black. So i again went back and this time the disc didnt show up at all.

It has happened a couple times where the Disc would not mount, It wouldnt eject the disc unless i went in manually and took it out but once i took it out the same problem wouldnt happen for a while, I dont think its the laser because One thing that has been pretty consistent is that after the game doesnt load (it will go to the game screen, It just wont leave the screen with the loading bar) I will eject it and it will go back to the ps3 screen but wont play another disc, but if i shut down the system with no disc in it and restart it then put a disc in, it will read it everytime and go back to the loading screen and freeze.

Right now i am reformatting the hard drive and see what that does, Next i may replace the BD7956FS IC? Maybe the chip isnt spinning the disc as fast as it needs it to or its just burnt out? because the disc is spinning but stops when it realizes the game isnt going to load. Could this also be because the spindle motor died?

Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks

Andy I came across the specs from the spansion site by searching the numbers on the chip and I believe this is it http://www.spansion.com/datasheets/S29AL016D_00_a7_e.pdf you can double check to make sure it is correct, I think they updated their series on this chip and changed the name.

Also it mentions in there that if done with prolong heat it will damange it. clearly frederico got his to work so although I failed I was not willing to try anymore. I should of done the IC chip replacement first for my issue where it did not spin the disk before attempting to swap the nand chip. When I had the card before the changes it allowed me to play demo so i think my issue was the ic chip or something else on the ctrl board, after the failed swap i could not play demos or the bd drive would not even take the disk in. With the stencil I think it is the best option to avoid heat damange to the chip.

I took the leap and found a motherboard on ebay with ctrl card and everything works now, I could not pass up the deal with ebay.com and Live.com which netted me a 20% cashback to my paypal.

    Good luck

Thanks for trying, unfortunately this spec sheet lists a 48 pin BGA package, not a 64 pin. I'll keep looking.

20% cashback to paypal? w00t! was that a one-time coupon deal?

Sorry I thought that was the right one but if you search for the numbers on the chip it should take you to the spansion site to get the spec sheets.

I only used it once but it does not seem to be a one time deal only. Go to live.com and create an account and cashback account and then search for products then go from there and search for the board. max I think is $200 on one purchase or for the year I am not sure of the full details.

    Just to follow up...
Spansion could not provide me with any further details on the S99-50111-001, other than to say it is physically different from the S99-50111. They did verify that it is 'logically' the same as the S29AL016D. "If you're writing software for the device you can use that as a reference". LOL - not me. But wow their engineer was very courteous and helpful despite not being able to give me what I needed!

I contacted solder.net, and they did say if I sent them a sample they could make the solderquik templates for me. So I'll be sending that out sometime this week (thx for the idea Rich). We haven't discussed price, but I'm expecting I'll need to order the min. quantity of 10 and it should be around $7 a piece.
