that is a very very good question. ive been researching it and so far the information is that you can replace the whole drive.......exept for the board you have to keep THE board that came in you ps3. it is linked to YOUR ps3 and no other board will work. ive tried to ask people that fix ps3 and they all say find somone to fix my board (the little clip that is broken in the pictures). i have found the boards for sale new for $35. if only it was as easy as buying it and installing it. if anyone has more info on getting the board "paired" with the ps3 please please let me know how this could be done. i have found all the parts to totaly rebuild my drive i just need to work out this one detail.
Just asking tho - does any else with a faulty drive get a whining noise when trying to read a disk? Mine can't be laser problem, but would a faulty board make a noise like that?
Yeh there has to be a way still looking but sounds like the dvd drive board holds al the keys to the drive that links it to the m/b.
Here we go the info that you need!!!! Right APPARENTLY on the KES-400aaa you can use a different board but has to be from the same drive type. They are roughly £25 but on the website i found are out of stock. But i'd tring the deck first that the laser sits in, if that doesnt work maybe trying to find one of these boards may work. Not sure if i can post links so pm me and i'll send you the link i have found OH well heres a link if it works LOL http://forums.llamma.com/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=22675&start=15
not all board are swapable, it looks like it must be from the same revision and have the sema firmware on it, so is very dificult (if not imposible) to find the correct contoller board to swap, some time ago (9 months) mi controller board died so i start to see if i find a new one to swap, and after trying almos 10 diferent a have no luck,so after a lot more of reserach i found the chip that contains the info that links the controller to the mobo, its not an easy job to swap it because is a BGA chip, but here you have a video showing how i did the swap, the ps3 is working grate since, i hope it helps, the link is : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Zh46cR6k3s PS: sorry for mi english

can someone try this for me? my ps3 stopped recognizing my games and blu-rays yesterday. had it for over 1 year so warranty is out. i read so many posts of people having the same exact problem. anyways i stumbled on to this thread and I was going to go into the service menu and try the "restore file system" (from page 1) when by fluke I got it working: 1. turn the switch off at the back of the ps3 2. press the I/O button on the front and flick the switch back on. 3. keep holding the I/O button until you hear the beeps and wait until it turns off. 4. while you're still holding the I/O button, flick the switch off and on again. 5. repeat again, doing this sequence a total of 3 times. 6. now just turn it back on...it was ask if you want to have your audio and video go through HDMI, etc. all of a sudden it started working! it appears all my games work but not all blu-rays (terminator 2 and planet earth work but not dark knight or kill bill). Then for fun i did the reset above and everything stopped working again! So i repeated the sequence above 3 times and now it's working!! strange!! what's weird is you can actually hear the blu-ray spinning after the 2nd or 3rd time...like it's getting charged up...can someone confirm this? i doubt it will continue to work but thought i'd throw this out there...
Ive been posting in this thread for a while and my PS3 is currently still not reading disks, I have opened it up a few times and nothing has made any difference. My laser lights up blue BTW. NOW I HAVE HEARD THAT USING THE RECOVERY MENU AND SELECTING 3. RESTORE FILE SYSTEM can sometimes fix the blu ray drive. Has anyone had first hand experience of this fixing the problem because there are a few other dotted round the web that have had it work for them. Please let me know if its worked for you. Thanks
i tried the "restore file system" but didn't make a difference. try the sequence i just posted up above...i'm curious to see if it helps anybody else. i tried my ps3 this morning and it still works! 2 days in a row now =)
by the way, all my blu-rays work now. i just cleared all the "BD Data Utility" information. it appears if there was any data in there for a particular movie, it will not play until i cleared it out
Ordered my lens and frame last Thursday and received it yesterday. I installed it and it plays wonderful. Save all of the trouble and order and lens and frame and swap it out. Very easy to do.
yo spec23 got one question for ya. do you smoke if so do you smoke while playing on the ps3 or does anyone smoke around it esp when it's on...if so there is nicotine(i shit you not )stuck on the lens for some reason it attrac's it like nobody's business to clean it you have to open the bad boy up (the blue-ray drive)and use a soft cloth like the one you'd use on your glasses say turn on the kettle and put the cloth over the steam that rises and as quick as you can GENTLEY clean the lens.THIS DOES WORK AS I HAVE DONE IT MYSELF and fixed freinds ps3 and everyone of them smoked in the "ps3 room"
Hi Graham, I just joined the site. I had the same problem, did you just buy a replacement blu ray lens? If you did, then I would consider buying a complete laser lens deck with the exact model of your original blu ray lens. I had the same problem once I replaced the lens with a new model. I put in the lens and all I got was a bubble on top right and never worked but only worked for dvd movies. Weird heh!! Anyways, I hope I help you, all I did was buy the exact lens model with a the lens deck included. That way you get a new motor and lens. Hope this helps of if you have it fixed then perfect!!!
Hi, i've read all the pages, but i would like to explain my problem to clarify everything. After Ylod i took the disk out of the drive but probably assembled it wrong. Tried to insert the disk (but it was like the disk was inside so no luck), so then tried that drive restart and then something bad happened... Now when i try to put in the disk it's reacting that something is being pushed inside (blue light), but no movement, it won't load the disk, just doesn't inject it. With the open drive i tried that drive restart too, but what i got is just wierd noise (like smth wanted to move but can't). I thought maybe the motor of the main board (not laser motor) isn't working, but when i unscrew and push that restart button it spins, maybe not enough power? Laser doesn't move at all. Disk isn't injected/ejected. what could cause that problem? and how could i fix it?
Hi i just signed up to this forum, I've found this thread to be pretty informative. I just got a PS3 from my neighbor for free, as it would not load any disks. I had a look inside and the laser doesn't light up or move in any way. I'm going to run with replacing the BMD-001 board, and i'm hoping that if i get one with the same revision, i won't have to swap the spansion chip. I only ordered it yesterday so it may take awhile to get here but i'll post an update when i try it out.
hey...... we all have got the same problem here bt no one is wise enough to answer..... i am able to get the discs in and out by making a swap switch but still not able to spin the disc or even move the lens... somebody please tell me how to power up the drive assuming that the drive is not etting any power from the board........
Not sure the gig, but it's reverse compatible. PS3 was jolted on my shelf while it was on one day. When i put game in nothing happened at all. It's acting as if nothing's in the drive. I tried different games/DVDs, the same result. When i put my ear up to the machine i don't hear it spin disks when inserted. it definitely isn't spinning disks. I took the cover off, haven't cracked the drive casing open. What do i do?
