I off the casing to the drive. The disk doesn't spin when inserted. It accepts/ejects disks fine. I took the top half off of the drive so i could see the internals, the only thing i determined by doing this was that the laser can move back and forth.

    *ATTENTION
*RESEARCHED SOLUTION AND LINKS TO PARTS

My ps3's disk drive wouldn't spin when i inserted disks. It would accept disks, and eject them fine. I tried all different types of disks, but the problem remained. I did a lot of research on this problem. A LOT OF PEOPLE RUN INTO THIS. My results are that the motor burns out in the disk drive, or there is some problem with the laser. Regardless, this can be fixed by replacing the KEM-400AAA. This is a piece (like a trey) inside of the disc drive that contains the drive motor, lens, and lens tracks and guides. I'm replacing mine. I opened the ps and took it out with nothing more than a T15 torx wrench to open the cover, and 2 philips head screwdrivers about the size of ones you'd get from an eyeglass repair kit. You can get strictly the lens if it's what you're looking for but it doesn't seem to be much cheaper. The KEM-400AAA is easy to remove as long as you don't rush the job. The part cost me about 100 out the door. I researched venders for the part and this seemed to be the cheapest from the most trustworthy source. (I didn't consider Ebay as an option) Another useful forum which helped influence my decision to replace this part without waiting around for other peoples' opinions was http://www.fixya.com/support/t518147-ps3_not_spinning_disk. I purchased the KEM-400AAA from http://www.psxboy.com/348_PS3-Lens-with-Mechanism-KEM-400AAA.html. I just ordered it. Good Luck!

Dudes, I posted earlier and I mentioned what I had done.
Ididn't post this part but I bought the KEM-400AAA laser lens the first time. It didn't work for blu ray but worked for dvd and cd's.

If you want to get your ps3 working again. You will have to take your PS3 apart if you are not in warranty anymore and find out your exact lens model.
The Kem-400AAA didn't work for me because, my lens model was KES-400.
I looked at my old PS3 further after I bought another PS3 and was tired of looking at my other one. The couple of things that happened to my old ps3 is that it accepted discs but motor wasn't spinning the discs!!
So I decided to buy a complete laser lens deck with the exact same model number for mine and I took it apart and took our the old lens deck and installed the new one, it worked!!
That is pretty much how I came to the conclusion that it was the motor. I took a risk in buying this lens deck but what the hell!!!

It may not work for some if you had a power spike to your console, then more than likely the console is fried!! That happened to one of my buddies, he just plugged it into the wall without a surge protector!! I always use surge protectors on all my electronics.

Well hope this helps someone out there. It worked for my ps3, popped in a game after I was done and it showed the game staight away. Remember only do this if you are out of warranty!!!

I have considered getting the laser deck first but I'm going to try the drive board first. I got it for $45 Australian so not a big outlay, plus i would have thought the laser would have showed some sort of life (Movement or light) if the driver board was still good?

If it is the board then i fixed it cheap, if not then whats an extra $45 on top of whatever i get the laser for...
The only problem with this theory is if i have to change the spanson chip on the drive board if it requires it. I'm running with the idea that i can use another controller board as long as its the same revision number, I haven't found a lot of confirmation on this. Even if i have to change the chip I'm hoping that the laser will move or light up (assuming a drive board fault) to confirm it is the board.

Oh yeah sounds like it but I thought that those were married to each other? That is the board underneath the PS3 drive right?
Well hope that works for you and get your PS3 up and going. Where did you buy the board from? Can you let us know how it went?

Yeah its the board below the Drive. I got it off of ebay.

As far as i could gather you can use another board as long as its the same revision as the one you are replacing, otherwise you need to swap one of the IC's. I'm testing that theory anyway. Because its coming from USA not sure how long it will take before i get it, but if everything works I'll let everyone here know.

hi, i have the same problem with my ps3 the motor wont turn at all and the laser lights up fine, plus if i move the laser it moves back again like it should, to test if a motor is still fuctioning as it should, remove it do not cut any wires though, make sure the connectors on the wires are apart and take a normal A sized LR6 battery and put one connector touching one end and the other connector at the other end of the battery. the m motor should spin very fast continuously until you take the connectors away again. if so then the motor is not the problem, could be the actual connector on the control board not getting enough power from overheating or somthing.

My part just came in today. I installed it and put my game in before even putting my cover back on. As soon as i put the disk in it started spinning perfect. I'm on my couch playing Madden as I write this.
    Success!

for those of you who think it may be your main board or whatever because you don't think that your laser is getting power. Do what i did. Take the drive apart to where you can touch the laser. then slide the laser down the track with your hand. then put the black top back on the drive. then position yourself so you can see the laser at least a lil bit. then push a disk in. when the disk goes in the laser will slide back to it's origional position as close to the center of the disk as possible. even if it doesn't spin. that means it's getting power. your spin motor is just fried

one more thing. the laser deck has an exact part number. mine was KEM-400AAA. When you purchase this product from the website i mentioned it specifically says "check the part number to be sure it matches the one you're purchasing" so i pretty much figured it was common knowledge to anyone buying a part to replace the piece with another with the same model number.

the website that sells the KEM-400AAA tells you where to look to see the part number of your laser deck so you know youre getting the correct part.

If you read the other posts, you may have to either buy a new lens deck with the exact same lens model as yours or the board that is underneath the ps3 blu ray drive.
I just bought the lens deck, and it worked. Playing blu rays, dvds and games again!!!
I cleaned mine as well, but it never came back as yours did the same thing. Either the lens is dead but if you want to test if it is dead or not. When it is open and off, push your lens away from the motor.
Then turn it on and if it moves back then the lens is alright, it may be your motor that is dead. I guess if that is the case you can buy a new motor but I found it a little more difficult to take that apart and that is the reason why I bought a replacement lens deck with everything.

Hey all.. so my daughter decided to shove my satellite card in my ps3. Yeah i know! Anyway, so i took apart my ps3 to get my sat card back which was fairly easy... anyway got my card out was very careful to reassemble perfectly.. powered up and all is good except it wont take a dvd.. makes a loud knocking sound on the right side of the drive..so i took it apart again.. and put it back together.. couldnt really see what was wrong.. kept playing with it and bam snapped a loader arm on the TOP of the assembly.. so now its broke for good.. does anyone know where i can buy a completely new drive.. possibly a good refurb?

Don't bother looking for a new drive..I don't think you can buy them, but there are plenty of good sellers on eBay for refurbs/used drives. Just don't buy from the cheapest seller unless they have really good feedback. I think you can get a refurbished/used drive for around $50 or so, so it's not the end of the world.

Ok I read almos this whole thread....First Ill tell you what happened.

I have a toddler hes one and a half and he decided to jam "9" yes 9 dvds into the drive I dont even know how it accepted this many but it did, I got them out without damaging anything else that wasnt already damaged...Now it accepts a disc but makes a awful clicking noise I mean AWFUL then eventually just spits it back out....I was gonna get the KEM-400AAA but didnt know if that was the right thing in my case? I have the originaly PS3 60GB got it first few days it was out so warranty is gone....suggestions anyone?

i'd say good luck for finding good lens/deck in good condition. they become rarer and rarer as time goes. i'd advice calling sony and pay the 150$ they ask for repair. its still, in my opinion, the best way to get it fixed easily and rapidly (1 week fromt he time you ship it to the time you receive it). plus you gtet a 90 days warranty if yit blow up again.

The KEM-400AAA wouldnt be what I needed? Cause I could change it out with ease....Im pretty good with that type of stuff. Or do I need something different since mine is an older PS3 ?
