ugh... im having a problem and im really pissed at my ps3 right now. I took apart the thing to clean the lense since it would freeze after a while or not read at all. problem is i forgot socom was in there, yea i know but i hadnt played the system for a while since it doesnt read discs right so i totally forgot. anyways, i ended up taking it apart again to see why i couldnt put the disc back in, and it was locked up, so i put the disc in the top part of the drive and put it together with the bottom and it came together fine. Then it wouldnt come out because those stupid little gray hooks are stuck up or something. i looked on guides to fix this but some dont look like my system and dont make sense with mine.

i have the BC 80gb from 2007. anyways i took the drive apart even more to get those gray latches down, but the black piece on the left side is locked even tho all the little white cogs towards the bottom move around fine. i cant slide the tracks on the sides worth anything. the guides dont make sense, i dont know if i should put it back together with the disc in and latches up or empty.

im going freaking crazy seriously, i just got MW2 from gamefly as well... i think firmware 3.0 did this too because it was working fine before that and it now has the common symptoms ppl complain about with the new FW. im thinking of quiting console gaming and going full pc gamer but theres a lot of ps3 exclusives im missing out on, i still havent got uncharted 2.

I have two 2007 model 40gb hard drive. 1. One ps3 has a Blu-ray drive doesn't read a thing (no error message either because when a cd/dvd/blu-ray disc is inserted,it just hangs and nothing happens.) 2. The other one has the YLOD but good blu-ray drive.

My question to you guys is can I just swap out the blu-ray drives?

i think yes, but i dunno about the sisterboard is its gonna work with the mainboard, just do it and come back with your result. its not gonna hurt your ps3 if its not working. that'd interesting to see if its working or not.

Yes you can do that. You will have to take the board off the broken blu ray drive and keep it with that PS3 and just attach it to the unbroken blu ray drive. It needs that mini board underneath they are married to each other that mini blu ray drive board and the PS3 motherboard.
My thinking it should work because, all the blu ray drive is is hardware and it needs drivers just like a PC. That mini board is the driver for the PS3 just like a PC.

Yeah, took the miniboard out of the broken one and attached it to the blu-ray drive and it worked like a charm.

hi i'm trying to fix my ps3, it wont load games, dvds or audio cds.

The drive will accept cds / dvds etc, your hear it being moved into position for reading and then nothing happens (no spin up).

after take the top of the drive up i could see that the laser moves into position (front of drive / centre of cds) but i can't see any light coming out of the laser.

I've tried putting another laser in but i'm having the same problem.

I've also noticed i broke the black & white cable for the blue ray disc sensor (front of drive) - i thought this just tells the drive to automatically suck in the dvds, could this be causing the problem?

anyone know what i can do next? thanks.

First, did you put the black & white cable back together? Second, if you replaced another blu-ray laser and its having the same problem then you might want to buy another laser and try to fix it again. The problem is the blu-ray laser you got was defective.

If it broke off and still unable to fix it then you better look for a new drive before you start purchasing so many blu-ray lens! Try to finda YLOD for cheap on craigslist and swap out the blu-ray drive instead. One thing when swapping out the blu-ray drive you neeed to remove the miniboard or circuit board underneath the blu-ray drive on the broken one and place it in the good blu-ray drive because the blu-ray drive is married to the broken ps3.

Well, I'm going to assumed the the blk/red wire is to power the miniboard so you will need it. THe miniboard is the driver for the ps3. Without the wire the ps3 will not recognised the blu-ray drive because when I tried to just swap blu-ray drive for another, the cloak ON THE XMB did not rotate at all.

I meant clock or timer instead of cloak.

Oh man, that is not good. If I am thinking that you are talking of the wire on the top of the blu ray drive? If it is that one, then you might as well try to fix that by solder or crimping it in there somehow.

That lets the PS3 know that you have inserted a disc and if it is not connected or broken like you just mentioned. Then you will have to fix that wire somehow or replace it. Do that before you try to buy a new drive but even then, the drive doesn't have the wire, the wire is just for that mini board underneath and is connected to that mini board and to the top of the drive. Either fix the wire or look around to buy the exact same wire. Try to find the specs on that specific wire. If it is just a generic wire that is made by alot of manufacturers or if it is Sony only wire? Hope this helps. Later.

yea its the cable that goes to the top of the front of the drive has attaches to a little board just under 1cm long, i found someone who sells the wire so i can just replace that as soon as it arrives, got another laser just incase (can always sell it off on ebay)

Just a simple question, if my laser lights up and all the motors work (including the disk spinning briefly) it surely can't be the laser thats broken right?!

In this case what on earth could be the problem? Mine PS3 has been dead for nearly a year (wont read anything) and I have spend months searching for info.

Why does my laser light up bright blue when I insert the disk then? (I have have run it with the drive all disassembled). The laser should be either on or off (dead or working).
