A continouos loading sign means bad LASER and not the controller card that is attached to the blu-ray drive. I know this because when I originally tried to just swap blu-ray drives without removing the controller card it would start loading but the STOP. (the controller card attached to the blu-ray drive is married to the ps3 motherboard.) Whereas a blu-ray laser is out it would still continously load.

I hate to say this but go ahead and double check if all your connections are connected such as ribbons cable is all the way in..etc.

Hello all. I have a PS3 (Model CECHH01) that has a dead blu ray, nothing happens at all when powering up and turning on PS3 - no light and no moevement at all. To those with the knowledge, is there a snowball's chance in hell of just replacing the current disk disk mechanism with a new one (including the laset and motor)? I also hear that the control board may be the problem since there is no movement at all and that I am S.O.L. due to the control boards being married to the motherboard. No chance of finding a replacement. Have any of your experienced the same thing with your drives and replaced just the laser and motor and had success?

    Thank, Tfloyd75

Hey guys, I've recently found a problem with my ps3. After I download games off the psn network and install them they won't play. The ps3 goes to a black screen and just freezes. The system also doesn't seem to read any blu rays and DVDs. I've formatted the hard drive and it didn't work I also tried to restore the hard drives system file because the ps3 tells me it's corrupted. That still didn't resolve the issue, and everytime I try to restore the file system it keeps telling me the hdd is corrupted. Do you guys think replacing the hard drive could help?

Hi this seems like the right place to post : )

I have a 40GB ebay ps3 with me now that i am trying to source the problem on!!

It was bought with a faulty blu ray drive that wont read disks!!!

I have already fixed more that one but this one is being stubborn. I suspected the laser at first (obviously) but i have another working 60GB ps3 that i am using for testing parts and have already tried replacing the laser to no avail. I have since done numerous tests including swapping lasers, decks and circuit boards just to find out more about whats going on with this unit.

When it came to me the laser would try to read the disk but the disc would not spit indicating a laser problem and swapping lasers from my working one did not work(although the disc would now spin but not show up) so i tried putting the drives circuit board of the NON working ps3 into my working ps3 to test the theory of the drive being married to the motherboard and what surprised me was i got the exact same reaction from my ps3 as the ebay one. ie: the disk would spin and seem like its reading ok but would not show up on the home screen.

What scares me about this is the fact that if my working ps3 acts the same with a foreign circuit board on it, could i of just bought an unrepairable ps3 that's missing the drives original circuit board and is now useless??

Im just posting in case anyone can gain knowledge from this or possibly pass some on :) cheers guys

I more thing before i go though, Has anyone had a working ps3 drive go wrong on them and a replacement laser didnt fix the job? The reason i ask is that anyone could of bough a ps3 from ebay with a unmatched drive(like me) and claimed that replacing the laser did not work but to eliminate the possibility of it being my circuit board i need to know if anyone has had a drive that was working and then broke down and a laser replacement didnt fix it?????

One more thing to add as ihave been reading above posts.

The drive not spinning at all should indicate laser problems as when i replaced the laser in the non spinning ebay unit, it did start spinning up but nothing would show up in what i call the dasj board. Then when i tried the ebay units laser in my working ps3 and it did not spin up either so a dead laser if definately indicated by a drive not spinning up at all!!!

NOTE : I do not see any signs of the disk loading on the ps3 dashboard. is this normal?
All i get normally when a game loads is the disk sing when you go to the controller shape in the dash board??

    Hi everyone.

I inherited my brother's broken PS3. The games he was playing started to freeze frequently after 1-2 hours of play (not a dust problem, probably DRE), so he took it apart to clean the blu-ray lens, but he somehow screwed it up. The system itself still boots just fine, but the drive just doesn't do anything: it won't take a disk inside, won't eject and won't read anything. Furthermore, any of the demos he downloaded don't work anymore. It seems that I can buy a new drive (or simply the lens) or send the PS3 to Sony for 150$. How can I make sure that it is only the drive that is busted and not something else, therefore I'll be able to buy another drive and the console will work just fine?

Hi everyone! I'm hoping someone can help me out, I just got given a 60gb PS3 (cechco3) and it won't read discs at all, I tried DVDs PS2 games etc and nothing. I get the little spinning disc in top right of screen but if allowed to it would sit there for hours, as far as I can hear the discs aren't spinning, before I make any purchases or open the case I just wondered if anyone knows what my best first step would be, I have rest the system and re-formatted the hard drive but it doesn't make a difference. As it was given to me I don't have a receipt or warranty so it's either DIY or sell I think...
Any advice will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I'm going to try to be specific for anyone helping me diagnose my problem.

I have the 80 GB CECHE01 with 4 USB ports and backwards compatibility.

My system is about 2 years old. The problem started a couple months ago when I noticed that sometimes upon turning on the machine it would not detect the disk inside it, but when I ejected and reinserted it, it would start up just fine.

This problem became more frequent, and sometimes I'd have to eject/reinsert a disk a few times for it to read. After inserting a blu ray game, it would spin for a while with the indicator bubble in the corner of my screen, then I'd hear a click from the drive and it stopped without reading.

Then it started happening to dvds/PS2 games. It got to the point where I might have to do this 10/15 times before it would read.

Now it won't spin at all, I hear no noise, even thou I have the blue indicator light and the continuous spinning bubble in the corner.

Can anyone give me a SURE diagnoses, and perhaps my cheapest option?

Also, I don't think it's a software problem, as I've never gotten the disk read error code, it has only frozen in games a couple of times, and has never froze with movies or ps2 game.

It only freezes frequently in the web browser(which I am using to post this and why I had to double post), but as I understand it, freezing in the browser is common.

    Thanks.

Well i have a problem too, maybe you guys can help.

I have the 80 GB CECHE01 with 4 USB ports and backwards compatibility too.

A while ago it stopped reading discs. Like i would put them in but nothing would happen. No sound like it if was loading or anything.
I bought a replacement the KEM - 400AAA and i tried installing it yesterday. All of a sudden it would not take the discs at all and it would make this clicking noise. Like the motor keeps spinning to the little white clip that goes against the rails of the motor stick is all the way at the end and it cant go any farther; yet the motor keeps on turning it like it has space or something.

I dont know what to do... can someone help me?
Maybe I put it back wrong or something?

I would say it is still a defective laser where did you ge the replacement from? Most on ebay are refurbished lasers of qustionable quality lucky if it plays over a couple of weeks to a month some die out again within hours.....

The lack of the bubble is that it isn't even trying to (or can't) read the disc you just inserted inside it. Blue light on the front panel means a disc is being inserted/is inside.

You can open the console, take off the sliding cover & top then open the blueray drive taking off the top metal cover of the drive and load in a disc this way you can see if it spins or the laser flashes meaning the ps3is making an attempt to play the disc, also

Check All Of The Connections the plug powering the drive the laser's ribbon cables and the big cable to the motherboard. maybe that will fix it. Also the replacement laser MUST be the same model as the original.

okay, so if your not sure of my issues, check back at my previous threads, but I wanted to update all on my problem. It has been fixed! I had to dish out the 150 for sony to fix my lens and so far after about a week or two, its still running fine. You get a 90 day warranty and they send you the box and instructions to send your ps3 back to them, they gave me my original console, not a refurbished one. so anyone thinking of doing this, i would recommend it, save your money and time and just do it right the first time. Again, thanks to those who helped me at the time. Happy New Year!

I had this problem and still do what you have to do is just press the eject button becasue the ps3 is waiting for a cd to do something so the ps3 haults until the cd does something thats why it gives you a black screen after you try to play your demos.

so just press the eject buttoon it sucks cuz your gonna have to do that everytime your start it up from a shutdown.

this will def help i know it. lol

Some info on my failed Blu-ray drive (may or may not help someone)

    PS3 Model CECHG03 40gb. First used December 2007.

In May 2009 I changed Broadband suppliers and got a new router.
I never updated WEP code on the PS3 so no software updates.
Not sure what firmware it would have been on back in May?

23rd December 2009 – updated the PS3 wireless setting to connect to internet
And updated the firmware – again unsure what version would have been available on this date, anyway after updating, played Racedriver: Grid and the system froze.

After this, unable to read any discs – DVD, BD or Games.

Stripped the PS3 down to clean the laser (Noted it was a KES 400A single laser).
Made no difference. Discs pulled in OK but would not spin. Loading Bubble appeared but got no further.

Ordered a new (refurb) Laser (including Deck) KEM 400aaa from GameXparts on Tuesday.
This arrived Yesterday (White Clip made in China if anyone’s interested). I replaced the Deck last night and the PS3 is now working again. My only concern is how long the replacement will last?

With all the other complaints about the firmware, it seems to be more than coincidence that after updating my firmware for the first time in over 6 months the drive fails within 10 minutes? But I can’t prove anything, it’s just heresay.

I will post further updates as to the reliability of the new laser.
