Question: to those of you who have sent your PS3's to Sony, how many of you received your original console back repaired? I really don't want a refurb, so I am on the fence as to whether or not I should send it out to them. When I call I'd like to specific I'd prefer my console back or none at all, but considering it will cost about $200 ($150 +tax and shipping) if I can't get my own console back I'd like to just put that towards a new one. My PS3 stopped playing discs this past weekend (see my other thread). It's a 60GB and well out of warranty. Anyone confirm/deny what some folks have said in this thread that unless you YLOD you generally get your console back?
Hey I was wondering if anyone had some tips for me. I have a problem with my 80 gb ps3. The system stopped playing discs one night. So I ordered the correct replacement laser and went through the same steps as others but after the replacement my system can still only read cd's. The system does not recognize blu-rays and regular dvd's. But like I said before it can still read cd's and ps1 games.
Hey everyone, I've been reading through this thread and found some great info! I'm looking at a mate's ps3 which doesn't read dvds, games and music cds. I've been able to establish: - Motor doesn't spin discs at all. - No light is emitted from the laser (or it's incredibly dim... I tested it with the metal cover off the drive in a very dark room, nothing.) - When a disc is inserted, the loading bubble appears in the top right corner and stays there. After reading the first dozen or so pages, I'm thinking this is a faulty laser. Before I go ahead and buy one though, does anyone have any other ideas? Any way to test the drive motor is working? I think that'd be the last thing to fail... But if anyone has any other tests to diagnose this thing that'd be great
I have a UK CECHK03 80GB ps3 with dual lens drive. I have replaced the laser and it reads games and bluray movies no problem when I manually place the disc. When I press eject button it will either start spinning the disc and loading game/movie or stop spinning so I can remove it, but the tray lifting motor won't work whatever I do. I even got another drive and I have the same problem. What's interesting is that there is no bga chip on my drive control board. I checked on ebay some control boards and I have nothing where in those pics bga chip is installed. Rev is BMD-011.
still no answer to my problem. maybe anyone can help me. mine sometimes work (bluray disk spins). but if i turn off the ps3 doesn't work anymore. I did everything posible(whitout changing components) cleaning, formating and system reset. awaiting solutions. forgot to say: i have ps3 60 Gb, ps 2 disks works, all of them

Hi there, I have a 80GB CECHL04 Ive opend the bluray drive and I can see its a dual laser, So what ive seen: When i insert the game it spins about a 1/4 and is taken in. But then it doesnt spin. I can see the laser moving slightly, and it makes a noise, But game stil doesnt spin, also thers no light on the laser, So this means I need a new laser right? Would i need just laser or laser and deck? Any help would be appreciated thanks!
Ok, I'm the one, who is having problems with Blu-Ray too. I'll brief what I have. 1. PS3 60GB PAL 2. Disks spin, laser come up 3. No "bubbles", not read anything 4. Demos and PlayStation Home neither work. As I've read it could be problem with controller board or nand memory, but I don't have opportunity and finances to buy new one. So, I'm hoping for two solutions: 1. Someone could find wonderful and free method to fix it (unlikely). 2. Due to new hax of PS3, I hope it will work without BD drive. Cherrs, ExMachina from Russia P.S. I wonder what could be a problem here. Disc loads and spin so it's not IC chip. I checked cabels and inputs - they are OK. But I see no buble or some kind of activity after loading. And I also don't see somthing fired or cracked. What problem It could be? P.S.S. I've heard, that If the controller board is faulty I couldn't even do updates, I'll get an Error. So, I recently did an Update, and I got errors, but after 3 or 4 times, I reconnected BD-rom, and Update installed!! I Also broke fixer on the motherboard, that keeps bd ribbon. Anyway, I'll try when I'll get time, to play with the ribbon, and I'll see If the demos or discs will work.
my situation: i started getting the typical disk read errors or just straight up unable to read disks. it started off with just ps3/blu ray disks, but slowly moved to ps2, dvds, ps1, audio cds. so my laser lens was going downhill. i bought a replacement. there definitely was something wrong with the original lens, because now i can play ps3 games, ps2 games, and ps1 games (and audio cds). BUT for whatever reason i cannot play blu ray movies (weird huh?) and dvd movies. but again, my ps3 games (which are blu ray) and ps2 games (which are dvd) work fine. from time to time, i experience slowdown (slight) and freezing/long loading in a ps3 game. i don't know if im just being paranoid or had slight problems at those times. because it doesn't really happen that much besides a few situations. so it might be coincidental. i can definitely play the HDD games and do everything that i normally can do on my ps3. just cant watch dvds or blu ray movies. after much research i have pinned it down to the following: 1. something is wrong with my controller card 2. something is wrong with my laser lens again 3. something unknown is wrong with my ps3 1a: the IC card is defective (maybe, since i believe it controls the motor. but why would ps3/ps2 games work but NOT dvds/bd movies? maybe they spin at different speeds?) 1b: the NAND chip is defective (unlikely since i heard it stores firmware, and i wouldnt even be able to play hdd games at all) 2a: don't know too much about lasers, but is it possible that my laser is too weak or defective enough that it'll play ps3/ps2/ps1 games. but not dvds or blu ray movies? i would imagine the laser lens is a "all or nothing" type of machinery. but again i dont know 2b: it might be dirty enough that it doesnt read it properly another interesting to add. when i do try to insert a dvd or blu ray movie, it sounds like it tries to spin. but then stops abruptly. i have the blue light present. but then i cannot eject the disk. i have to turn off the system and start it up by initially pressing the eject button. then the disk will pop out normally. anyone have any ideas? i am updated to the most recent firmware. don't know if corrupted firmware will do anything to the ps3. but i tried putting the most recent firmware (which i already have on my ps3) to a thumbdrive. and then doing an update through a storage device off the ps3 xmb. it doesnt recognize it. is that because i already have the most recent one? or should it recognize data irregardless and i have a deeper problem? im kinda hoping sony releases another firmware update so that i can cross this possibility off my list. i dont expect any solutions. i just would like the community's thoughts and brainstorming. as there is the possibility that a light bulb might go off with other people's personal similar experiences. thanks for your time! fingers crossed!
Has anyone ever found a way to re-flash the NAND chip ? I supposed the Decryption Chip is where the "Paring" needs to take place. Has anyone tried an external USB Blu Ray drive ? Does that work for games ? How about connecting the PS3 BD to an external usb enclosure ? Thanks all, Derek
Seriously guys, just bite the bullet and buy a new lazer deck. Nine out of ten times this will solve the problem. Don't ask me why, it just does. And its a lot cheaper than sending it away to get repaired if your warranty has run out. Make sure you get the right model lazer though.
Hey there pmrs, I haven't found evidence that you can indeed do that. In fact, I removed a BD from an 80 GB and put it in the 40 GB machine. Everything works fine other than the fact that the XMB does not acknowledge the drive at all. I have not tried a 40 GB Playstation BD as a test though. The threads though state that this doesn not work either. Some folks suggest removing the NAND, but that's an ugly procedure too.
Unless the 80gb lazer deck has the same serial number as the original 40gb (which I doubt it does) then of course its not going to work. Check the serial number and make sure your replacement has the same one. Read back through the thread for information on what serial number you might need. I can only vouch for my 60gb which originally had the same problem as you with the BD failing to load but DVDs and PS1 games worked fine, after a while though nothing worked. I bought a new lazer deck for 50 quid and it worked a charm. I haven't had a problem since and lets just say its no stranger to Modern Warfare 2!
Hello all, I too am experiencing problems with my blu ray drive on my PS3. I am not very tech-savvy and I am livid at the fact that i just dumped $130.00 on games just to find out that my console will no longer play them. It still reads discs that aren't Blu-ray (CD's etc.) I am not really comfortable with opening up my PS3, but my warranty is no good and any assistance would be appreciated. I have a CD- lens cleaner on the way back here, hopefuly (although doubtfully) this will work. I am a smoker so it could be a problem with buildup. Is the blu-ray drive independent from the cd player? If so, can someone tell me a couple of quick fix steps before i go buying new parts and/or slamming this $500 P.O.S on the side-walk? I thought 360 sucked, but im beginning to lose faith in all these new consoles, whatever happened to dependable gaming?!?! PLEASE HELP!
Khaybee - your blu ray laser is dead dude and you need to either send it to get repaired or repair yourself. Happens to a lot of the fat PS3's. Happened to me last xmas so I bought a new deck for about £40 and fitted myself. Im not exactly techy either but it aint that difficult. Most difficult thing is aligning the plastic drive tray back up. Bloody fiddly! I've had no problems since.
My blu-ray drive isn't working. I've ripped the BD drive apart and checked to see how it works when it's powered on. Here's what I've gathered so far: When I insert a clean disc, it pulls it in and then the laser runs (blue/purple light) and that's it... no more light, and the disc doesn't even spin. Which is causing this to happen? A motor or laser problem? Note - When I insert a disc, the led did go blue, so that part is normal. Also, this problem applies to every type of disc (I've tried CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs). If I manually spin a disc, it can spin smoothly... so that confirms that nothing is blocking it. Hmm. Which is causing this to happen? A motor or laser problem? Should I buy a new laser? Thanks!
