Just got this error after 2 years of owning PS3 80G
Tried to do what it says "restore" but made no difference, tried taking HD out wiped dust, but no difference error meeage keeps coming back. I've red we can put coirrupted HD in another PS3, formatted & put back format it again & it should work.
MY question is, if I buy brand new HD & put it in PS3 will it work
(I know all my saved data is gone) or do I need to do something to it before PS3 will even recognize it?

I'm also in the same boat as you guys got the same model 80GB here an excerpt from my Ps3repairguide

"1 NOTEBOOK 2.5MM HDD SATA ANY SIZE (We recommend staying with the same RPM as the PS3’s original HDD, 5400RPM. You can upgrade to 7200RPM, of course, but we cannot romise that it will not have ill-effects on your machine.)"

Seems like any easy fix lets hope so.

*sigh* Well I purchased a hdd and changed it out everything was going smoothly until the update finished and then the worst happened a red screen telling me to contact technical service appeared they can give me no explanation as to why I'm getting this red screen but they want me to send it in for $148 no way that is going to happen so it looks like its time to do more research.

I can't promise you that its going to work. I was able to format the hdd with no error but after I installed the new update I got a red screen telling me to contact technical service. I purchased a Western Digital HD 250GB 8MB 5400RPM. I talked to technical support and they told me that the hard drive isn't the problem and that I'd be able to use it once I sent the playstation in and it got fixed. I purchased a broken ps3 so it never worked to begin with if you had a working console it might just work for you.

Yeah the HD's can become corrupted when does this error come out? at startup? can you still play and save or no?

You need to fully reformat not quick restore the HD on my 160GB it says it will take over 9 hours to fully reformat, dont know how long it would take for your 80GB maybe half?. It works and saves but it makes this kinda grinding noise ( like my old computer) seems like i should reformat it or defrag it. But as long as no errors i guess its good plus leaving my PS3 on for 9 hours seems like it would do more harm than good.

A pixelated green ( lemon lime type color) screen that is frozen can be due to the graphics chip (RSX) being damaged, which means that it may not be your HD that is corrupted but your PS3 may be close to YLOD and other graphics chip related problems that would make it unplayable until repaired(if it can be). But it still could hopefully be your HD try this if you haven't already:

turn on the console and hold the powerup button keep your finger there till you get 3 beeps if it turns on normally restart it and do it again till you get 3 beeps and get taken to a menu with several options choose the refomat option not quick restore ect. try that to clean up your hard drive if its corrupted.
