    Hello,

Well i have been thinkin of modding my DS3 controller with the blue LED mod and i don't know if anybody has done it over here but i would be thankful to anyone who could help me out here, i have a few doubts that i would like to clear.

as of the actual mod i have already collected tons of info on how to do it but my problem is that i want to mod and change the lights that assign the controller no. which are by default red to blue everybody shows how to lit the PS button with blue led but noone shows how to change those 4 LEDS at the top is there any other kind of mechanism involved. any kind of help would be welcome

The LED's for those ones are right on the controller board, and they're very small. You'd have to have some pretty crazy soldering skills to be able to even attempt it.

Hello, peeps. I want to mod my ps3 controller with LED lights, but the circuit board is very different from the other ps3 controllers. It is a VX8 circuit board. I don't know where to solder my LED wires. Any ideas where?. The photo is the front

the leds are above of your finger nail on the right :p it does say LED1 LED2 LED3 LED4.... you can replace them with other leds..... just use fine tip solder iron or use solder paste with a heat gun.... dont forget flux paste if youre going with the fine tip solder iron it will hold the new leds in place while you solder one end of the led... if you plan adding more leds like the PS button just add 2 wires to the LED1 since its always on.... you can even add leds to the rumble/vibration just either use leds with resistors or use higher voltage leds depending on how much voltage is going out of the motor leads on the pcb :D

wouldn't use a heatgun on the leds if they are plastic. leds are polarized so if not put in right orientation then the led won't work.
Willy, are you going to use the same style of leds or totally different?

they don't melt if you use heat gun in the right way on lower temps... you can also melt the paste and place the led on top... as for polarity... leds do have a marking for + and - and the pcb shows the polarity from the second picture you can tell that - is marked with a thicker line in the rectangle around the led...

    here is a led marking

and here is a pcb marking

Thanks for the response, I tried putting the LED wire (positive on top of LED1) and I was trying to find where the negative would go. I tried a few where to place it but the LED lights up even though the controller is off D: ..... I would like to make the LEDs light up at the same time when I turn on my controller. It seems that every points for the negative only powers up from the battery.

This is what I am going to do for this controller that has a VX8 circuit board. The photo shown has the common circuit board that everyone has in their dual shock 3 controller. That one is less difficult to mod lol

did you take off the old leds before attempting to solder the new leds?
Cyprien, i have just over 4yrs experience working on boards at celestica which used to be part of ibm besides other places.

isn't that a bit excessive?.... lol you should check the traces from the thumb sticks they both have + and - running from them but only at power on.... im pretty sure you can see where they go by just looking at the ribbon cable from the sticks... try using the pad near the button on the first picture its the one on the right sitting on top of the 14 pins its the big one with the solder on it then try negative from the battery see if that works...

Wow isn't that going to drain the heck out of the battery

because even though the ps3 controller has a large battery that can support up to 8-10 hours of play wouldn't the leds draw enough voltage and ohm's from the battery making it only last 7-8 hours??

i think he means amps.... lol ds3 has 3.7 V battery and around 600mA unless they changed the capacity... normal operation is around 1 watt of power and around 300mA... using leds that draw 2-5mA each is better.... but its best to use higher capacity battery.... im pretty sure you can find replacements for ds3 that peak at 1.5amps.... even if he hooks up 10 leds to the normal battery it will cut the usage time by around 1-2 hours or so no? even if he gets 10-12 hours w/o rumble.... with the leds he will be at 9-11..
