I read someone saying that you can now backup ps3 games to the hd and external hd via usb. Is there any truth to that

Well, technically yes. Some (most, I think) PS3 games have install features where you can install part (or all) of the game image to the hard drive, thus increasing load times and decreasing wear on the BD laser. (Really wish MGS4 would just let you install all of its relevant info onto the hard drive, instead of chapter by chapter. Would make playing the single-player a lot more fun.)

    Nothing on external drives, though.

I think "back up" / steal / pirate / borrow / protect my investment ,was the key word he was wondering about.

He is right, you can back up PS3 games, using SAK, though its a pointless waste of time, the keys will be missing and the PS3 isnt hacked, so couldnt play them anyway.

I do, too, but give them the benefit of the doubt and all that.

Have you tried this KajNrig? I would like to read up on this some more. I'm paranoid about my PS3 dying, betwen my late night hours playing and my kids playing. I'd love to run large portions of games from the HDD. I have about 180GB left on a 320GB.

It does it automaticaly with a lot of the games. Example, Devil may Cry and Ridge Racer bacily put the whole game on the HD but required the disk to play. I would prefer the info to be loaded from the disk. My 60 keeps getting full and i have to delete games like ridge racer and stuff that i dont play anymore.

Like glassd said, some of it happens automatically. MGS4, for instance, automatically installs data after every major portion of the game. (As glassd also pointed out, DMC4 and Ridge Racer also auto-install data.)

Soul Calibur 4 has an install feature. I installed it, and there's almost no noticeable loading time at all.

It'd be cool if you could do that with PS1/PS2 games, but eh, I'm not too picky about that.

But yeah, it works. With a hard drive as large as yours, you'd be able to use those features easily.
