I have formatted the current hdd 4 times and still have all the same problems. If it was anything else, would it still play dvd's cd's and demos under 800mb without a problem?

Formatted???? No....! (scream from a distance is heard). Don't format it from the PC. That may likely be causing your problem concerning the first hard drive. Blank it completely and let the ps3 do the formatting. You can do this from the control panel option of computer management, and then go to disk management to wipe it... do not initialize formatting. Doing it this way will allow it to see an unallocated hard drive which what is wanted here. The only part of the ps3 that has any format recognition is the usb ports for fat 32, anything else will make the ps3 look for an os.

So i just installed the new hdd and it says that i have to upload the current update to the hdd. So i am going to re-install the hdd and back up the firmware onto a jump drive and go from there.

Yes, please try a game that you know works. One that also requires you to install data onto the hard drive. This way if it does the same thing, we can say yes bad hdd. If it doesn't repeat history then where that download came from could be incompatible, or worse corrupted.

Won't know for sure until this happens.

So I rented Star Wars T.F.U. and right after the install(which went succesfully) it froze. So then i restarted everything and it did green yellow red light thing. So i let it sit for a few minutes and then started it back up and I was able to PLAY!!!!! I played for 30 mins and then my wife came home sooo... I had to stop. It saved perfectly and did not slow down in any way shape or form. NOW the only thing that went wrong was that during gameplay I had no sound, but during the movie sequences there was sound. I did not care about not having sound seeing that it was the first time that I was able to play a game on my PS3. So was my rare gaming experience a coincidence or was my PS3 really working? And lastly why was the sound gone? Sorry for this being so long but I was just excited about playing a game. Let me know what you all think. Thx!

Okay... that's both good and bad. Sorry to hear about the sound. I'll take it as good sign that a game played, so try the demos next, if the issue persists then there's something else going on, and odds are where ever your getting the demos from could be completely corrupted. If there is a different source try that next, and if possible do it straight to the ps3, and not to a jump drive or cdrom. You mentioned doing the backup to this and since it didn't work I will, for the moment, declare that as being the problem... a bad demo.

As far as sound goes, get your favorite music CD and pop it in. While you let the system play go to your sound configuration and start fooling around with it. I am hoping that all that may need to be done is a re-initialization from this area, and that will be that. With the cdrom in the drive it ought to be obvious when its working.

If neither the demos or sound return, I'd give sony a call, but only if the sound doesn't return, and check your input outputs; just make sure everything is plugged into the right ports in the right order. If the sounds gets fixed but the demo doesn't, I'd try a different demo next to see if there is a wash, rinse, and repeat. If it doesn't then... well no sense repeating myself.

The star wars game played because I swapped the hdd with a new one. Never before was I able to install a game and then play it. I download all the demos to the PS3. I have never downloaded demos to any other storage device and then uploaded to the PS3. You think the PS store has alot of bad demos or is it just my PS3 going insane? Well at least I get to learn more about my PS3! Also I never had any probs with the old hdd playing cd's and dvd's. U think that if I put in a cd that it will help reinitialize the sound synch with gameplay?

Thats a rather odd problem, possibly a glitch with the demo? Was there any sound in the demo's menu?

Well this was the actual game. No problem at all with anything else except no sound. the only sound was from the movie scene. also there was no sound from the cut scenes, only from the movie parts of the game.
At first I thought maybe a heat issue but wouldnt it just freez3e or shut off? Then I thought mobo but then I wouldnt get to play as long as I did and the install wouldnt go so smoothly. Ugh!! Canuckerz I didnt thank you. A big thanks to you!

Your Welcome, anyway I was thinking overheating at first as well but if it plays smoothly for awhile then I don't think that could be right, so I'm back to thinking part of the mobo or possibly just a bad game disk/install.

I'd suggest deleting the game data for star wars, installing it again. If it does it again try another game with an install like mgs4.

If its still having problems after that it would be best to send it in to Sony because you could do more damage than good to go inside the ps3 to fix something, especially since we still cant find the root of the problem.

I suggested the reconfiguration of speaker audio out of concern that it could have gotten jacked up if the demos were bad, however I do agree with canuckerz completely about doing one more delete and re-install.

If the audio doesn't work still go into your audio video configuration, re-run it, and try the game again. If this should fix the problem then all well and good, but if not give Sony that jingle! The ps3 has an auto detect for both audio and video and although I've only heard one extremely rare incident of it getting jacked up, I'm hoping that this fixes it. Worse case you be out of your ps3 for... what 2 days maybe 4??? Any one correct me, but I know Sony has about as good turn around as Microsoft which is about this many days. They use express shipping, but just be careful not to say anything about changing out the hdd!

In fact I'd say throw back in your old hdd if it must be sent off, this way if you get a new unit... I don't think I need to say anything further. But be warned though once the seal has been busted for warranty they will likely not touch, or help you thus forcing you to buy a new one... Microsoft is exactly the same way, and that also includes under warranty, they may however consider giving some personal phone support if you are careful with your words, and even more careful with your details.

So I will be calling sony. With the new hdd installed the ps3 still freezes. sometimes I am able to play star wars t.f.n.u.(actual game) then after about 10 minutes, it freezes. The DBZ demo plays fine and the naruto demo plays fine and I havent tried the lost planet demo yet. Ohh and in the ps3 menu, the little screens that show a little bit of gameplay from the demos that have been downloaded and whatever game is in the system at the time, freezes. If I move off the controller game icon then move back its fine for a little bit, then it freezes. Could this be a sign of the processor being burnt out? Probably calling sony today.

Yeah at this point calling sony is a must, remember when you send it in it has to have the original hard drive installed.

Ha listen to this. So just for laughs last night I turned on my Ps3 to play some the dbz demo, because that and Naruto are the only successful demos I have been able to play on the system, and I thought: "hey what the hell! Ill give it a try!" So I tried playing Star Wars T.F.U. and I played for 2 1/2 hours without a problem! I had sound, there was No feezing! I was problem free for the first time ever! I think the system knows it has to go to sony so it stopped messing around with me and worked.....lol. Still sending it to sony just letting you guys know what had happened. Funny stuff!
