I have a 60 gb ps3 that just recently stoped playing DVD's and CDs but still loads blu-ray discs and Sony ps3 games just fine. I have done all the latest updates and am about to reformat the hdd to see if a system restore helps. Just wanted to see if anyone else had run into this problem or knows of a better solution. Thanks

I'm pretty sure the DVD laser's died out. The PS3 (or at least the older ones) uses two separate laser diodes or so - one for DVDs and CDs, and the other for Blu-Ray. This would explain why you can't load DVDs but BDs (including PS3 games) work fine.

That's my first guess. Actually, that's my only guess, as I don't know what else it could possibly be.

well u got a dew options, 1 replace the laser, or 2 back up your stuff to an external, sell your 60gb after restoring it so none of your info goes with it, and buy a slim, those to me are the simplest option, i would lean towards a new ps3, just bc the 60gb were plagued with problems

sky, you sound like a sales rep trying to totally outphase the old PS3s with the new ones. :p

Also, people here will give testimony to the fact that the 60GB actually wasn't "plagued with problems" as you suggest. But that's neither here nor there.

Are you using the PS3 to play PS2/1 games as well? If so, you probably should get a new laser. But if you're just going to play PS3 games, then doing as sky suggested and getting a slim PS3 would probably be the best idea.

Just make sure you don't regret it somewhere down the line. (And even then, I suppose you can just get a PS2, too...)

Thanks for the advice. I plan on trying to replace the laser. Is it easier to do that or replace the whole deck? It doesn't seem to be that much more expensive to do that. I plan on keeping this ps3 as long as I can. Since I got it at launch this is the first time I've had a problem with it. Compared to the 6 xbox 360's I've had replaced over the years Sony seems to be doing a better job in my opinion.
