Devil May Cry the first in the series is at the top of the TOC list and the bigger the TOC size of the game(original) the more backups that are compatible. Reference what games(originals) you have at the link below for their TOC sizes.

Hope that was enough info to help.

    PAY ATTENTION EVERYBODY

for all the people in this forum:

First, i would like to give Pizzag congratulations for his creativity, but i need to WARNING everybody that this swap mod kills the Blue Ray Laser unit.I´m a PSX and PS2 Modder for quite some years, and when i first read this post i was so glad, that i run to buy a PS3 unit. After i get home, i start to mod my ps3,open it and installed the swap switch and the originalmode/swap mode switch.i try it with the PS3 disassembled.Every thing went fine, but then i get worry when i saw the Laser unit injecting power to the coils tryng to focus something in the drive, when there wasen´t anything there.

    Example:

-In Swap mode switch, put the original game inside.
-turn on the machine and wait the media to get recognized.
-turn the switch mode into eject
-the original game comes out BUT THE LASER START´S CLICKING TRYING TO READ SOMETHING THAT ISN´T THERE.
-THIS IS WRONG.the laser coils starts to burn for the increasing of power that it receives.this power increasing isn´t dangerous when it takes less then 1 second, in fact this result in focus or tracking way to work. But never more then 0.5 sec.

In the first and second batch of the PS2 Slim (V12), there was this problem.Sometimes the PS2 crashed out and the laser starts tryng to focus/trcking and this amount of power totaly burned the unit.Every body knows this, it was caled the Mechacon Crash.

I Stoped using the Swap mode by the time i cheked the Laser spinning up and down tracking the media that wasn´t there anymore.

This is for sure the problem that maked Pizzag Laser unit Burning, since he uses this mod for a longer time then others.

Im realy Sorry for my bad english, but i realy needed to WARN everybody for this bad/danger solution.

    Be well.

Very informative Viks, thanks for taking the time to warn us.
I'm still unsure if i'm gonna undo the mod as I must use the swap technique only once or twice a day at most and more importantly because, unlike pizzag, i'm not feeding the PS3 odd stuffs to see how it'll react, like a DVD-R on which a PS3 BD iso has been burnt or even a BD-R!

From what I figured: between the time you eject the original and the time you insert the backup, the laser indeed tries to focus on a ghost disc, 2 times, then it goes back to idle. When you insert the backup, the laser starts looking for data again as inserting a disc pushes the small switch on the right side near the motor part, which re-activates laser activity.

I do believe the laser unit in the PS3 is able to withstand those 2 focus it tries to do when not finding a disc, like any laser unit in other home appliances; the thing to know is either the PS3 laser unit is plagued by the mechacon crash bug that was present on late PS2s. I believe not since the drive changed completely and so far, except from pizzag's feedback, i haven't heard of anyone getting laser problems.

Because if you remember well, even people using originals only, with no swapping involved whatsoever, had their laser die on those V9+ PS2s and i think we would have heard about a lot of lasers killed on non-altered PS3s by now if their laser units also had such a bug.
    Later,

    TSR

TSR - You forgot SupraGaz's friends ps3 also had dvd laser failure.
Hopefully he will find the root cause of the problem and let us know.

Man, I tried to do this trick and I failed :(. So I need help

First off, I am only using one switch to do this, its just on and on i guess. The other thing is, I cut the sensor wire. It does eject and load, I can see there is power going to the motor and what not. However, when I eject, the disc never comes out, it loads..but never ejects. I found out why, its because of the stupid flap, it blocks its way. Is the flap automatically supposed to go back up while the disc is ejecting? if so what the heck have I done wrong?

The other thing is, although the game gets sucked in, it never actually loads. I can see the blue led is there and when I hit eject, the blue led goes away for a second and then comes back, and then I can see in the XMB the PS3 tries to load the game with the little loading logo at the top right, but it never actually does. I never see the disc icon appear.

Now I know maybe people cannot answer this, so in that case, if I solder back the 2 wires (red and black) that were originally in place with the motor, will my PS3 be back to normal? I did cut off the sensor wires as well, it was an accident so it actually pulled off from the switch itself, It would be extremely hard for me to put those back. But can someone please let me know, I am so sad...feel like I destroyed my machine :(.

I made a new thread about it but there seems to be more attention here so i'll carry on here with what i have done.

So, i have changed the laser and the problem still persists. And the laser I thought was bust, actually worked in the other PS3 so I now have no clue what the problem maybe...

Yes, the flap moves out of the way automatically.

You might have the wrong switch installed if you are stating you have an (ON) (ON) switch and adding the (i guess) tells me your not for sure. :) You should try changing the switch you have for the (on)(off)(on) switch like this one below.
This is a switch that has 3 positions to choose from not 2.

Unless you can repair the sensor wires it will not load or eject as an original would, therefore you will HAVE to get the motor switch right in order to load and eject manually. I would also advise to use my tutorial on page 6 of this thread to help you trouble shoot.

    Hope this helps

This may be a shot in the dark, but have you checked the ribbon under the piece of mother board(3 bolts below) and made sure this was secure as I think it does more than just read the sensor to the right of this picture, as the little black box to the left is also a sensor of sorts I believe.
I believe it may also (read/detect/have something to do with) what type of disc is in the tray??
Like I said "a shot in the dark" :(

    For tsrps3:

    hi

look, you are wrong, just open you PS3 unit and swap any kind of media and you will observe that the Laser never stops trying to load a ghost disc.it dosen´t make it only 2 times, its a continuos rotine. The Laser never gets any information that the CD/DVD is out of the drive.I wich this isnt true, has i said, i run to buy one unit just because there was the possibility to play all my PS2 backup´s.Im afraid In a few months there will be many people with coils burned in their laser units.I didnt said that Mechcon bug was present in this machine, i said that the procedure makes the swap mode very similar to the Mechcon crash.

    Be well.

Thanks for your help mate but that isnt the problem either. First checked the ribbon underneath and after that I changed the circuit board itself and I still have the same problem. Im lost now, Perhaps it was a dodgy firmware install when he updated, I dunno....

    supragaz, did u try this?

AFTER HOURS OF MESSIN AROUND WITH THIS MOD, I FINALLY GOT IT DONE!!! THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS I LEFT THE STOCK BLACK AND RED WIRES ON THE MOTOR AND STILL ADDED MY SWITCH. THAT'S THE ONLY WAY IT WOULD WORK. I TESTED MY BACK-UP OF MARC ECKO'S GETTING UP AND IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM. THANX ORIGINAL POSTER AND ALL WHO HELPED. PEACE

i dunno what difference it makes leaving the old wires on the motor but it does matter according to headon.

could leaving the wires on also stop laser from reading when the disk is ejected? that would be nice but how if its just for power and why did it make a difference?

Just to let you guys know, some how it worked...

I think what happened is I put in a disc before powering up the console.

So I had it turned off, plugged in though, so the red light was there. And then I ejected my disc (it was already in there) and for the first freaking time it actually came out. I was surprised, and I think it might also be because I put all the screws back. I didn't want to put all the screws back because I did not want to have to take off the metal shell everytime to troubleshoot the issue. But this time I put everything back like it was, and boom! the disc ejected.

Then I put the disc back in, powered up the console and it read the disc. So it does work, however I have yet to actually get a proper backup working. I burned a copy of Legend of Spyro a new beginning that I have, but it did not work. I tried it with original copy of Dark Cloud and Devil May Cry, but when I swap with the Spyro backup, it shows the Playstation 2 screen and then just blank.
