hi iam in the process of doin this,,, i just need one mre thing i need to knw is wa size f screwdriver do you need to open the blue ray drive???thanks
Very true. I tried booting a DVD backup of a blu-ray game when the PS3 was in ps2 mode and ended frying the dvd part of my laser. so currently my ps3 only plays blu-ray and cd, LOL. i'll be getting a new one from ebay soon though and then i'll be back in business. I got a blu-ray copy of virtua fighter 5 from a generous poster on this forum and under firmware 1.8 it will not load. i sawpped it out for resistence and it booted to the Playstation 3 logo and went back to the XMB with an error. So maybe i updated my firmware too much or it wasn't gonna work from the get go. But many thanks to the donater. and great job where you guys are taking all this. I was hoping it would be a hit. Later peeps
What up fellas? As a rolled thru this forum, i just had to go to radio shack and buy all my accessories. When i was doin doin all the modding, I loaded my disc in, but when i press the switch the other way, my disc won't come out! Can any 1 help me? I think it's because i got the wrong 3-way switch...there's 2 "ON's." maybe both ends make the disk load. See the pic, both say ON.
Sorry fellas, i got the discs to come out...The only thing wrong now is, that when the cd is loaded, the ps3 doesn't read it. I also have my 1gb mem card in the slot and it doesnt read it either. I;ve hooked all the cables back like they should. Any suggestions?
headon, the problem is probably that you didn't reconnect the ribbon cable that is under the bd drive properly. it happened to me when i first put back my ps3 and i kinda freaked out. I would expect the same for the memory card reader's cable. Just reopen the ps3 and re-connect those 2 cables properly and i'm sure you'll be fine.Make sure you insert them to the maximum possible otheriwse the ps3 won't see the devices. (hence why it doesn't detect your discs anymore) pizzag thanks for your report.. we're gonna have to find an alternative for PS3 games.. ^^; I hope you'll get a new laser soon. Thanks again for the mod concept! See you
I'm having the same problem, the motor works perfectly but disc is not being read.i re-attached all wires and still nuthing. Was there a sensor that was needed for the ps3 to detect the disc? I was thinkin it was that magnetic piece or the little switch on the board with the 3 screws. I disconnected the first sensor instead of cutting the wire. wrong move?? PLEASE HELP, WANNA PLAY NBA!!!
Hi, i got a question Thanks for big pictures and I couldnt really find any picture on 4- Take the metal top off. you will see a small circuit board with 2 wires towards the front of the drive. This is a sensor that allows the game to be sucked in. You need to disable this by either cutting the small wires, Hooking up another small switch so you still retain original functionality, or put a small piece of tape over the sensor. Can anyone elaborate on that? thanks!
AFTER HOURS OF MESSIN AROUND WITH THIS MOD, I FINALLY GOT IT DONE!!! THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS I LEFT THE STOCK BLACK AND RED WIRES ON THE MOTOR AND STILL ADDED MY SWITCH. THAT'S THE ONLY WAY IT WOULD WORK. I TESTED MY BACK-UP OF MARC ECKO'S GETTING UP AND IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM. THANX ORIGINAL POSTER AND ALL WHO HELPED. PEACE
If this is to much let me know and I'll edit my post I just wanted to give back to the community that gave me so much knowledge. Please give credit where credit is due. pizzag is the founder of this mod as far as I know and he gets all the credit as far as I'm concerned. The user pizzag has posted a tutorial that I found helpful you can find it here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/499497 along with a lot of helpful pics and/or use the pics I made to aid you in doing the 3 switch mod also. I credit alien1201 found at afterdawn.com for the drawing of the switch assembly without this I would have been lost on how to add the other switches for original functionality. Thank you very much. I re-drew his drawing cause I had a little bit of trouble making everything out but all credit goes to alien1201. Use them both if you like. I was pointed toward the tutorial by SupraGaz. Thanks for your help and video/pics it really was worth the time and energy. Everything I bought from Radio Shack or Walmart. THIS IS A TUTORIAL FOR MAINTAINING ORIGINAL FUNCTIONALITY OF THE PS3 WHILE ALSO ALLOWING FOR THE PLAYING OF LEGAL BACKUPS I have not seen the switches mounted in such a way so please give credit where it's due (ME as far as I know am the first to mount switches in such a way ) and feel free to use this and/or spread the word of this new found way of mounting the switches. P.S. No harm was done to the exterior of the console only wires being cut...that's it. On to the pics.... Will be posting them soon... The Intercooler is a variable speed unit that has 5 fans, 4 in back and 1 large fan on the end and works rather well. It also places the power button for the PS3 in the front of the unit. PS3 in action video.... Sorry it's so big, but I did that to maintain quality. http://rapidshare.com/files/36934988/PS3_MOD.mpg.html I am currently working on finding an internal 3 volt source for the motor and will post my findings. EDIT: PM me if someone would like to send me a burnt PS3 BR disc and I'll try it on Firmware 1.32
Great job ChokeDYou, currenly i was workout on this trick as well. keep go on than we can share the information. I got an idea about 3 volt source come from, that is 60GB PS3 that LED on Card Reader or LED on ethermet cable. Not sure is that all LED is 3V or not, but u have a checking electric volt meter(forgot what name it is) may can try to check on it.
Absolutely awesome for using the intercooler for mounting the switch! Full credit to you for the idea! Ive been slaving away at work making a half decent case to mount the switch and you've done this. Well done! You've done a superb job! Looks very neat and tidy, downloading the vid now. Cheers
Thank you for the nice comments. I'll check that for you and see what I can find out. There might be something there to use. spriggsy stated that you can get a +5v source from the hard drive wires so I'm going to do some figuring with this equation, divide the voltage drop you need = 2v = drop from 5v to 3v by current(ohms)5 volts in ohms = resistor I need to make the bridge(drop from 5v to 3v) I need to find out how many ohms = 5v It can also be done (I believe?!?) by this equation if I'm not wrong, current times resistance = voltage in ohms I hope this helps and please someone tell me if I'm wrong.
Yeah good job, Still i don't know why you guys want to cut the sensor wires when you can just unplug it nicely.
I think he cut them to splice some new wires to it so original functionallity can be kept with the extra switches. I didnt use extra switches, but i didnt cut the wires either. Thought i was gonna break the connector plug though it was that small!
Well, Yea, I did want to maintain original Functionality, that's why I cut the wires for the sensor but for the most part I did that because I didn't want to take a chance messing up the plug or the outlet for the plug. This way I can always go back and add wire to it or snip off some more wire and try again(solder) instead of risking the plug and outlet which can remain in tact doing it this way. I have a way (bad luck sometimes) of snapping stuff like that right off and ruining a project like this.
I have a question, if i wanted to play a backup of my ps1 game, do i also burn it in a dvd-r? I tried the trick using an original ps1 game and my backup on a cd-r but all that came up on the screen was an error message. i used alcohol120% to burn to cd-r. Any suggestions? I wanna play boody roar!
how do i burn PS2 games? i tried burning one and do reinserts. doesnt work. i burned mine on dvd-r using imgburn. am i doing wrong.
or do i have to set the booktype DVD-Rom on DVD+R media? i am trying to play ff12 not working! i have a real copy of madden 04 dvd-rom. ok i may be a noob. I searched a little. What is TOC? what does it do in SWAPPING? I am confused
I have backups on DVD-R and +R media and always burn slow as possible. I happen to use NERO to burn but it don't matter much I don't believe and as far as the TOC making the difference you need an original game with a larger TOC size than the backup your trying to play. Look here for a reference, http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/182717 and also someone correct me if I'm wrong, you have to have this formula for playing backups DVD5 original= DVD5 backup DVD9 original= DVD9 backup Blue Ray ??? don't know for sure and I still haven't had time to check the playability of PSX yet....anyone ??? Hope that helps. ChokeDYou EDIT: I have made a little progress with looking for the inner source for the 3v motor but I'm still falling short of finding anything. Lets just say I've eliminated a bunch of possibilities and I'm still trying to find something to use until a friend can get back with me on some tests he's doing with resistors to take from the HD 5v source.
