PS3/TV compatibility?

    I live in the UK and the PS3 costs loads here. Since the PS3 is region free, would it be possible if I just bought one from amazon.com for example (from America) and then used it on my PAL TV back here in the UK or would there be compatibility issues? Also my TV doesn't have HDMI, but does have DVI, so would it be possible for me to just use a HDMI to DVI plug in the PS3 instead of the the standard HDMI cable?
