I tried disc management, it didn't partition it properly... not sure why though.

    Hey Guys
Has anyone tried this -- install a brand new HD in the PS3,just like your going to upgrade it, get the PS3 to format it in the Sony internal format, then remove it, install the original one, and then take this new one and install it in an external USB case, connect to PS3 and see if it can read it??
Someone must have tried this already, let's hear why it won't work!!

Hey everyone, I remember having the partitioning problem when I turned my laptop to a dual booting pc with xp first, then vista just to try it out.
for those of you with vista, this is really easy. vista has it's own partitioning software WITH resizing.

    1) Click on the Start menu
    2) Right click on Computer and click on Manage
    3) You may get a User Account Control dialog here; just click Continue
    4) In the left pane, open up the Storage category and click on Disk Management
    5) Here, you will find your partitions for your disks. Right click on the partition you’d like to modify.
    6) Click on Shrink Volume to shrink the selected partition.
    7) Then make a new partition with the free space you've made on the drive.

For xp users, the vista boot disk works well, and won't brick your drive, as partition magic has done to one of mine before. (if you don't have the disk, there are ways to get it, just for this purpose... I'm not supporting illegal downloading... :p )
Just boot your computer through the vista cd, as if you were going to install vista. (BUT DON'T!! lol)

    1) Boot the machine from the Vista DVD. Select the appropriate language and then "Install Now".
    2) On the product key page, press SHIFT + F10 to launch a Windows PE 2.0 command window. Then type in DISKPART and press enter to get into the DISKPART utility.
    3) Now type in LIST VOLUME - this gives you a readout of the volumes available on the system. Select your external drive
    4) Now type in SHRINK. Vista will reduce the size of the selected Volume by around 50%. (If you have any experience with the command line interface, you can use the help of the tool and make it whatever size you want)
    5) then it's up to you, again, if you have experience, you can just use Create Partition in diskpart, or now that there's free space, you can just go back to xp and create a partition that way.

Answer: the PS3 is not a computer that can format a drive in this manner. The PS3 is for a lack of better terms is a commodore 64 that's been given steroids, and Viagra. It has the ability to handle plug and play, it can format the drive... but only for its own needs. The console doesn't have a standard operating system designed for such functionality. It can recognize keyboards, and mice along with other items. I have a gaming pad for the PS2, and because it has a usb port as well I can use it on my PS3... it won't let me use it for any games however because it doesn't have driver support in this regard. It will let me use it in the normal screen mode that starts up, but beyond this that's it. The PS2 version 3 which had a hard drive attachment was exactly the same way. I was able to get a bigger hard drive working with it in when I formatted it with fat 32, it had no problems! The Ps2 couldn't format it and in fact didn't recognize it until I did this. Sorry but it seems some thins never change.

Hey ahall77 just thought you'd be interested.... the PS3 recognises Xvid avi's not divx avi's.

To convert them I use total video converter V3.10.

I had played with tsMuxeR before for creating AVCHD discs with DVD-Rs but the AVCHD spoofing via a FAT32 drive was new to me. That was fun!

However, when I first read this it made me think that I could remux or re-work a pre-existing AVCHD directory to just split the main m2ts file to a smaller size. In other words, it would keep the menu, other M2TS files and any other special features.

However, it seems like tsMuxeR can only take that one main m2ts file that you choose and make a brand new BDMV and CERTIFICATE directories. In other words, you can't keep the original menu it seems or any other special features.

Mainly I just want to verify from you guys if this is your experience?

Also, when dealing with subtitles from a pre-existing BDMV directory, do m2ts files have those subtitles muxed into themselves or are they in a separate sub-directory of the BDMV folder? I don't have any pre-existing BDMVs with subtitles to test but I am interested nonetheless for future hacking.

My other question would be, if dealing with subtitle-less BDMV directories, what is the point of spoofing an AVCHD disc via a FAT32 drive and going to the trouble of splitting the files when the PS3 can streaming or download M2TS files from its internet browser?

For example, I had a BDMV directory whose main M2TS file was 17GBs in size.
I was able to do two things with it:

From the PS3, I went to the internet browser and pointed it over to my desktop machine (on the same intranet) that has apache web server turned on with the mime.types file set to describe M2TS files in "video/mpeg m2ts ts mpeg mpg mpe m1v".
Back in the browser, I clicked on the link for the M2TS file in question and it started buffering and streaming the file flawlessly (via the Ethernet). No conversion or special software needed. Just a web server on my desktop machine and the PS3's internet browser.

The other option I did from the PS3's internet browser was that I pointed it to my desktop machine and told it to "Save Target" for the M2TS file in question. It proceeded to download the 17GB M2TS file to my PS3's hard drive. Played beautifully after it downloaded and no splitting was necessary.

My true question would be if there is a way with tsMuxeR (or another program) to remux a pre-existing BDMV folder to just split the large files but to keep everything else intact such as the menus, special features, extra M2TS files and the subtitles?

    Thanks guys.

why is everyone making this so complicated. especially with the western digital. theres no need to partion or reformat to fat32. its already IN FAT32!!! and there is already VIDEO, MUSIC, and PICTURE FOLDERS in the hard drive. whenever you send movies music or picture over to the hard drive. just open it normally and it will all be there on your ps3. you guys start complicating things and people get lost and star doing dumb stuff like make partions and reformationg to NTFS.

if anyone needs some simple help, contact me!

no it wont recognize it. it has to be fat32. NTFS simply isn't compatible with the ps3. and as far as i know you cant reformat from NTFS to fat32, only fat32 to NTFS.

Anybody know how I can format more than 32 gigs to fat32? It is not possible using Disc Management in Windows. I have heard of people doing it through linux. I have a 1 TB external drive and would like a 200 gig fat32 partition so that I can use USB loader

Windows XP and an app called Partition Magic. I did my 320GB NTFS and created a 50GB FAT32 partition. This app does not work on Vista.

Use Fat32Format, this is your solution.

Just in case anyone is looking through this forum site a year on, if you want to see your folders on an external hard drive instead of hitting the x button to go into the hard drive, simply press triagle, and then select display all, and you will see all of the folders on your Hard Drive.

From my own experience swiss knife was useless because it only created one partition which was a 150GB on my 750GB hard drive. I used a programme called fat 32 formatter which did the job for me. It took a few hours but once it was done it worked perfectly (free programme too)if you want to find it just search for fat32 format or ps3 external hard drive format into youtube and you'll find a really easy video telling you how to do it. I deleted all the partitions using windows xp and then used this program to format it.
