Ps3 YLoD Attempted fix's. Any more ideas?

Have you come across any problems post re-flowing with HDD's?

I reflowed and it got me to my main menu in the xmb. I then updated my firmware but it crashed at 57% when installing it.

I was then stuck in a continous loop of it trying to restart, the recovery menu wasn't accessible or anything like that. My only option was to format my drive however now when I boot my ps3 the green light comes on for perhaps 10 seconds and the the machine shut down to the red light. No YLOD just shuts down.

My recovery menu is accessible however none of the options work. Restore system usually results in a message saying cannot access hard disk, things like restore system files results ina shut down to the red light.

I've put the HDD in another ps3 and it does format.

I'm stumped.

EDIT - also will a ps2 ribbon cable for the power/reset work on the ps3. I've managed to damage mine!

 

im not talking bad about this, the fix is great, and yeah it allows you to back up and remove and stuck discs etc. it just sucks that the ps3 has this flaw and we have to pay for it.. sigh.. at least i got my ylod ps3 from my friend and didn't pay too much.. my turn around time was 6 business days after i sent out the box.. they sent back a refurb model in excellent condition looks like new.

 

yes i think a ribbon ffrom a ps2 will do the same job!!!!


also you shouldnt have formatted youre hard drive!
someone else had the same problem and this cured it!!!!


1)disconnect hard drive
2)disconnect battery backup
4) leave for 5 mins
5) get lastest firmware on memory stick
6) reconnect hard drive and on board battery backup
7)switch on holding power button for recovery mode
8)recover firmware
9)update firmware wire memory card
10) sorted!!!!!!!!!!!

Well the ribbon works fine but problems persist. Really gutted!!

Still getting cannot access hard disk errors or 8002F281 - Sony says this is a problem with the ard disk but i've tried another ps3 hard disk and thats the same. Plus mine formats fine in another machine.

All this from trying to update the firmware... aaaarrggghh.

OK I've no idea why but i'm formatting my HDD in another PS3 doing the full 3 hour job so I'll then try and see if it'll let it format it in mine?

Preparing for the worst, does anyone know if there is a HDD controller chip on the motherboard on anything like that? Something that perhaps has become unseated and thus the root of the problem?

Yeah I can boot into the recovery menu fine. When I try to boot up as normal I get no video output and the machine shuts down after about 10-12 seconds.

If I access the recovery menu it will sit there happily for as long as I like... until I select an option. Restore system usually results in the cannot access hard disk or a reboot. Update firmware will give me 8002F281.

I've ordered a new 320gb hdd from play.com for 39.99 thats sold as compatible with the ps3 so we'll see what happens when i bang that it?

 

How would I disconnect the battery backup?Also my ps3 has ylod after I re-flow itIt turns on asks me to connect a control I do then it asks me to insert update I do via external hdd(is this a problem?)then it says checking for update but then it shuts down blinking red.Should I boot into recovery from the start?

I just put my 60gig in a box cut a hole in it put a hair dryer in the hole for 20mins boom(tough actin tinactin)ylod fixed(fingers crossed at least last 3 months).then I tried my bros 40gig boom it worked but it's in recovery mode & asking for reformat & update so I download & go through with it it's checking for then shuts off blinks red ylod is back(f***)re-do it boom it works but still in recovery mode so I reformat it again(happy again)it gets to 56% shuts off red ligts come back now what

 

I have 2 PS3's the first YLOD about a Year ago and the 2nd 3 days ago I decided to try the heat fix on both so I bought a heat gun yesterday tore both systems apart and attempted the fix.

The YLOD is gone and I was able to extract the disc which were in both systems but neither system is working correctly still.

System 1 (Dead A Year) - turns on sounds like it is trying to boot but I have no video or audio then the fan goes from stage 1 to 5 in about 1 minute and the system shuts down.

System 2 - First Turn it on begins to boot gets to the profile screen, but once I hit the PS3 button to activate my controller it freezes and the pixelation becomes all distorted, if I turn the system off then back on at this point I get no video or audio like system 1 but at least the fan stays consistently low to medium.

after reading as much as I can on this forum I believe that I may have applied to much thermal paste, but I want to hear opinions before I go through tearing theses boxes apart because the frustration level is high and I'm pretty much to the point of dumping another 350 dollars on a new system.

 

Whooo! i finaly fixed my ylod 60gb ps3 earlier, thanks gilksy ur the man! i should buy you a beer! haha i hope it wont happen agen but if it dose....flux, heat gun, thermal paster job done!

After repairing a handful of PS3's for friends and colleagues of friends, I was gutted on Tuesday night when my own machine yellow lighted on me. I did the fix on Thursday night, I'm really good at taking them apart now, I can even replace the warranty sticker with no damage. Booted her up and got the YLOD again. A few hours later I discovered that the memory card reader was not plugged in correctly and was causing YLOD, sorted that and she's running like a charm now.

 

another handfull of ps3's fixed, how many is that now gilksy? lol

 

We can find a way to increase de fan speed, the system will start with the fan at a stage 3 for example so it will more difficult to overheat causing ylod.

 

Quick general question...

Since the trend seems to be in the majority that the original launch 60gb model was the source of the initial fails, is there any merit to this model being a problem model?

I ask this because I have an original 80gb with the extra USB & Memory Expansion (Card Readers), and that is what I had my YLOD experience on. I'd like to submit that no matter what system you have, you are susceptible to this problem if you play your system excessively, (kinda the point though), and do not keep it in a cool/well ventilated location.

Quick update: I completed my Re-flow 2 weeks ago and my system is still going strong. My fan seems to stay between stages 1 & 2 and I have had no issues with the video or audio outputs.

so i helped my friend re-flow his ylod 40gb ps3 put it back together but now theres no video/audio, just a solid green light it doesn't turn back off or anything. Is there anyway to fix this or is he boned?

 

@rage2kill - can you get into the system recovery menu?

Sorry if you know this but press and hold the power on button, it will beep once then shutdown to the redlight. Release it then press and hold it again to turn it on. It will beep once then twice, at which point release. Assuming you then get the display here then I wouldn't think the display itself was faulty.

You can then try and use restore default settings option 2 and see if this resolves it. If not try option 3. This doesn't so anything potentially harming in terms of losing data.

BACK TO MY PROBLEM -

I got a 320gb WD drive from play.com and tried putting this in. It didn't work initially but I'd read elsewhere that the launch model 60gb PS3's can struggle with SATA II drives. I got an old jumper and put this on my drive to try and drop it to SATA I and see if it would help (despite others saying it wouldn't as the WD drives now have an in built chip) anyway I tried restoring the system, it said couldn't access the disk but allowed me to re-try so I reseated the HDD and it is now trying to restore the system.

So fingers crossed!

Because I could only access the system recovery menu it's still going!

Apparently it can take anywhere upto the best part of a day, due to not being able to chose the quick option. I've read on other forums people having took 17 hours etc.

I'm gonna leave it on and see how it goes. As soon as I know I'll report back.
