kingdev, no i can't get into the recovery menu.

Also if this helps when i first turn on the ps3 the screen turns black for couple seconds then goes back to being blue(which is my no video screen color).

Hmmmm I've had a similar issue with my machine starting up staying on the green light for a while, then shutting down to the red light. However I can access the system recovery menu.

I assume on the basic side, you've tried both hdmi and component cables?

Colinjest and co will be able to advise better but perhaps the reflow never went successfully? I'm surprised the system recovery menu doesn't come up though with the machine staying in green light mode.

OK BACK UP AND RUNNING! :0)

Firstly, thanks to colinjest and everyone else who's helped.

My HDD was left on system restore for about 27/28 hours. I got back from work and nothing had changed so I bit the bullet and turned it off.

Switched my machine on and got nothing. Powered on, stayed on for a few seconds and shut down to red light, but not YLOD style.

Went into the system recovery menu and tried a few options, all rebooted or failed. Made sure the HDD was in correctly restarted and went to the recovery menu again. Went straight to update firmware and pressed select and start. On this occassion it said the hard disk would be formatted and hold select and start for 5 seconds.

Did as instructed and it went through to 100% then booted up and started updating the firmware, this completed and were now back up and running.

I was at my wits end but it just goes to show you can get there with a bit of help and a lot of patience.

    Cheers everyone.

One thing I learnt after messing about with the ps3 for quite sometime was that if you're getting power then there's life in there somewhere. I'm by no means as savvy as some on here but I'd at least give the reflow another blast if you can be bothered. In the scheme of things it's not that time comsuming.

I also used flux as well, whether or not that helped I'm not sure but it certainly didn't harm it.

Hello I have 3 broken ps3 and need help badly. I followed YLOD fix from gilks and now all 3 have different symptoms.

    1. This ps3 turns on normally however it crashes and freezes, it seems to me like the fan not work enough ,its really quiet and doesn't seem normal to me.Also it gets really hot quick.

    2. The only thing wrong this one is that the USB ports are not working.

    3. This one still has the Ylod and will turn on but really quickly turn yellow and off.

    Hi there,
I got a ps3 unit with the "classic" ylod. I tried to fix with the gilksy guide and now it works. Well, sort of... It turns on but after one minute or two it shuts off with the ylod. I don't know what should I do because it doesn't seem like the regular ylod. After it turns off I can turn it on again but it crashes seconds later. I get boot and can enter the safe mode. I tried reflow two more times and it's still the same. Looks like it's overheating but the ps3 doesn't get hot and the fan runs at low speed.

If anyone has any ideas I appreciate. I'm not giving up yet.
    Thanks.

It doesn't work like that. As perry07 has already stated the hard drives contents are encrypted, a pc won't recognise the contents of the drive and suggest you format it, if it finds it at all.

Heres an answer from Gilksy that he posted in September:
for the faults described please check all ribbons especially the one that connects to the wirless board!!!

make sure there in square and all the way before locking the tab down!!

also make sure the black wire with the minature bnc connector is plugged properly onto its socket of the wirless board!!!!!

I believe I share the same problem,it seem to me like it overheats because the fan isn't working well . My fan to me just seem like it to quiet.

    Hey All,

I recently bought a YLOD Ps3 from a guy who said he didn't have the patience to fix it. I brought it in, took it ALL apart, and did the fix. The first time I did it, I was a little too anxious to get it working, and didn't buy new Thermal Compound for the chips. Started it up without it, and it worked fine for about a minute before it told me it overheated and turned off....

Next day, I bought thermal compound, took the whole thing apart, and put it on the chips. Put it back together, and it worked for maybe 5 minutes... I was in the middle of connecting to my wireless router and BOOM, YLOD again!

So, I started over again, took it apart, took off the compound, and reflowed with heat gun. Put the compound back on, and now the thing won't do anything.... won't start, won't give me any lights, won't make any noise... I've taken it apart again, and was going to try some tests with my multimeter but, have no idea where to start...

Any thoughts here? I'm about ready to buy another one and try it again...
