Ok the other day he restarted his comp.(which he rarely does) somethings. he rebooted and everything was perfect. Later on he noticed a slight burning smell. today he was on the computer and it shut itself off completely. his mobo gets the green led but nothing turns on. the psu fan doesnt turn on and it is really warm and hot. he also smell a real bad smell out of the top psu fan. what could be the problem mobo or psu? i had him look for burn caps or any brow oozing. also no char marks on the mobo. had him plug the comp into another socket in the house and nada. any suggestions or resolve?

the psu is most likely gone. swap it out with a new unit.

I am the brother...I get the green light on the mobo and also the orange light on the ethernet plug...other than that, there is no life to it.

    the old psu looks cheap.

if he smells something burnt from the psu, most likely something burned or popped inside the psu.

test the system with a spare psu before getting a new one.

yea was thinking that as well. doesnt have a spare. probably should buy a psu. hes looking for a 550w to 600w one. any that you would suggest for a cheap price.
