I have a v4 ps2 with a duo chip and tried to play my FFT backup and it will only go as far as the opening movie then it won't work anymore. I don't know what to try first: get better cd-r media (prodisc is what I used)or get a new drive (8x is as slow as my drive will read and write). The original plays fine with no real bad surface scratches. What can I do?

Try better media. Verbatim Datalife Plus discs are about as good as it gets. Burn at 1x also. This helps the disc last longer.

I don't think the media would make a difference in terms of burning speed would it? I can't burn at anything lower than 8x with any cd-r media.

The media wouldn't make a differenct with regards to burning speed. Slower burns simply produce better quality backups.
