my friend has a dvr unit and he records shows and certain programs to it. before i begin capturing some of those to my hard drive i wanted to know what type of dvr it is, is this necessary? or does it now matter?

that depends how you are going to capture them. if you are just using the analog video outputs into your capture card, then it really shouldn't matter. but there are other ways to extract the data, without losing quality. with my replay unit, I can remove the hard drive, install it in my computer, and simply copy the mpeg-2 files over. I know that some newer models have USB and ethernet ports, so you may want to do a little research on the specific brand/model to see what its capabilities are.
